لوif بعثتمyou sent إليَّto me مِنكمof yourselves خيَالاa vision
What would it cost you, now that you are far beyond reach,
to send me a vision of yourselves?
أيّwhat شيءٍthing يضرُكمwould harm you لوif رحمتمyou pitied
ضُعْفَthe frailty of حاليmy condition فقدfor indeed تضعضعتُI have grown feeble حالاin condition
What harm would it do you if you took pity on
my frail condition? For I have grown utterly feeble.
إنif يكنُbe ليلكمyour night برامةَat Ramah قدalready عادhas become
قصيراًshort فإنّthen indeed ليليmy night طالاhas grown long
If your night at Ramah has become
short, my own night has grown long.
أوor تناسيتمyou feigned forgetfulness فلمyet not أنسI forget ماwhat كانwas
ولاnor زلتُhave I changed إنْeven if أخوa companion of الودِaffection زالاhas changed
Or if you feign forgetfulness, I have not forgotten what was,
nor have I changed, even if my companion in love has.

My reproacher said to me, 'You have gone astray through Layla.'
Tell him, 'May you never lack that straying!'

A marvel [uncertain reading]: her cheek and the moisture of her dusky lips—
the one became a glowing ember, the other limpid water.

And when her teeth gleam and her hair hangs loose,
I imagine a pitch-dark night and a glittering dawn.
ياO لقوميmy people, to my aid مَنْwho المجيرُthe protector مِنْfrom الحبّlove

O my people, who will shelter me from love?
For it has turned my body into a toothpick.

If only the Hijaz caravan, concerning Layla's people,
would bring me news from them and some word:

or have they camped for the evening in Wadi al-Aqiq?

They left me like Urwah ibn Hizam,
after Afra, lamenting the ruined campsites.
وهيand it is مِنof عادتيmy habit أحوطَI care for الاصاحيبthe companions
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle الخليلthe friend أَبْدىrevealed اختلالاa failing
And it is my habit to care for companions
when a friend reveals a failing.
لاnot أحبI love البُرْيْقَthe little lightning-flash إلاّexcept مغيراًheading toward the lowlands
لاnot أحبُّI love الرياحَthe winds إلاّexcept شمالاthe north wind
I love the lightning's glimmer only when it heads for the lowlands;
I love no winds but the north wind.
ياO بناتَdaughters of السُّرَىnight travel زبيداًto Zabid زبيداًto Zabid
وَدَعيand leave عنكbehind you سُرْدُداًSurdud وذؤُالاَand Dhu'al
O daughters of night travel—to Zabid, to Zabid!
And leave Surdud and Dhu'al behind.
