    Welcome to Layla, and to the camels that guide her;

No, rather to her driver—no, rather to her camel-chanter.

A warm welcome to the riders who travel beside her

Over the uplands, and the litters that journey by night with her.

Since Layla left me, my liver has tasted no

Coolness; nor has my eye closed its corners.

She settled in Najd, while my home is in al-Ghuwayr—oh,

Would that events would bring me near, and her near too!

And Umm Amr was made to forget my companionship—a folly

On her part; I never thought distance would make her forget.

Often she breathed perfume, and her smile was

Pearls; the one mingled with the other in her mouth.

O my companion, will the crosswind carry

My greeting to Layla? Then send it forth.

Why do I love al-Bakri's daughter? My clan is not

Of her people, nor is my valley her valley.

It is only the languor within her eyes

That makes hearts yearn for her, then takes them captive.

My riding camels have tired of Siham, ever since it was left

By Abu al-Ghamam, who used to water it.

Until, when it was said, 'He has returned after his absence,'

I resumed reciting my poems and embroidering them.

Welcome to the lord of ʿAkk and its true son,

On the day of boasting, its patron and benefactor.

Welcome to its night-traveling star and its ocean,

Ever-flowing, and its raging lion and its defender.

After the envious grew covetous, and there was a tangle

Of desires that Abu Uthman used to restrain.

And one of little reach aspired to authority

Beyond him, and the unworthy sought high honors.

    فاليوم يبصر طرق الحق عاويها

    When he was absent from the seat of power, its barking dog snarled;

So today its howling dog sees the paths of truth.

O glory of Barash, since you settled there,

It has indeed towered above al-Jawza in exaltation.

Between heaven and earth, upon a height,

Clouds surround it, their spouts let loose.

Clouds shade you, and the rain-bearing stars take their lesson from

The deeds of your hand, as their morning clouds journey by night.

Rather, you are a blessing to any road you travel,

And the steady rain never ceases to water it.

You left us desolate, O Abu Uthman, and withdrawn were

From us favors in whose early bounty we had planted.

And after you, the poets were lost; indeed, unsold lay

The wares of praise, when the one who raised their worth was absent.

So today the lands of ʿAkk are, as they used to be,

Peopled, and their dwellings are dwellings once again.

And today its supple spears quiver with pride,

And today its seasoned steeds neigh with joy.

And today the knot of power is grasped by its master,

As before, and the bow is held by its carver.

May the God of creation never take you away—what a man,

A lavish giver of food, who gives the world and all within it!

Your serving bowls stand brimming, like rocky hills,

When people's hands have frozen shut.

And you keep the bonds of close kinship unbroken,

When those who break them spurn the bond once joined.

I owe God a vow to fast for Him

When you arrive, and to keep appointed hours of prayer.

A joy of which you are the beginning; and soon

Muhammad will come safe and well, and we shall complete it.

We are your ransom against every calamity

And ordeal; a people's slaves are their redeemers.

And may these courtyards never cease to be fertile,

Green for their visitor, blooming for their seeker of bounty.
