ألاah كَمْhow often يُعنّفُrebukes فيكon your account العذولthe reprover
وماذاand what يَرومُseeks وماذاand what يقولsays
Ah, how often the reprover rebukes me on your account!
Alas! How much does longing torment you
And what does he seek, and what does he say?
What does it intend and what does it say
وكمand how often ذاكthat تُقْفرlie deserted منهbecause of him الرسومُthe traces of dwellings
وكمand how often ذاكthat توحِشُgrow desolate منهbecause of him الطلولُthe ruined dwellings
And how often the traces of dwellings lie deserted because of him,
And how much does that make its marks fade
And how often the ruined dwellings grow desolate because of him!
And how much does that make its yearnings lonely
أمّاwill you not ترحمينَshow mercy أمَاwill you not تنعمينَshow kindness
أماdo you not تعلمينَknow بأنيthat I am قتيلslain

Will you not show mercy? Will you not be kind?
Have you no mercy, no kindness
Do you not know that I am slain?
Don't you know that I am slain
أفيis it in كلevery يومٍday نياقٌshe-camels تساقare driven
ودمعٌand tears يراقare poured out وبينٌand parting يهولterrifies
Must there be, each day, she-camels driven away,
Is there every day a she-camel led
And tears poured out, and a parting that terrifies,
And tears shed and affliction intensifies
وقلبٌand a heart يذوبُmelts وجَفْنand an eyelid يصبpours tears

And a heart that melts, and an eyelid pouring tears,
And a heart that melts, an eyelid that pours
And a mind that grows gray, and a soul that flows away?
A mind that greys, a soul that flows

How long, then, this weariness, and how long this coyness?
So how much is this weariness, how much this languor
And how long this delay, and how long this departure?
How much this procrastination, how much this departure

Come to me, for sleep has flown from me;
Pray for me, for sleep has flown from me
And sickness persists, and the wailing drags on.
Illness has adhered, wailing has prolonged

For my body is wasted, and my dwelling is barren,
For my body is thin, my shelter collapsible
And my heart is ailing, and my night is long.
My heart is sick, my night is long

صَرَمْتِyou severed الحبالَthe cords قطعتyou cut off الوصالَunion
وخيرُand the best الأنامof humankind خليلa close friend وَصُولone who maintains ties
You severed the cords, you cut off union,
You have severed the ropes, cut off union
And the best of humankind is a close friend who keeps the bond.
And the best of people is an intimate friend
