Do you know a people dwelling at al-ʿAqīqayn,

And a clan dwelling at al-Ajāriʿ and al-Bān?

    Human gazelles—their tents are at al-ʿUdhayb;

And what tents have ever held gazelles?

Parting drives their camel-litters through the desert wastes.

Languid-eyed, they captivate the man of understanding.

And they rise as moons and waft the scent of aloeswood.

And they gaze like white gazelles and walk like branches.

As though upon their bosoms lie braids

Of night, or beneath the braids lie pools.

May God water Nuʿmān of the arāk trees, for I

Truly love whoever settled in al-Arāk and Nuʿmān.

Nights of Laylā the ʿĀmirite, which so often

Became a home and abodes for youth and play.

There I trailed the hem of wanton revelry, swaggering,

And there I dragged the sleeves of youth,

Until youth's season and its sweetness passed,

And the lush life we had lived bade us farewell.

So, O rider of a lean, trusty, swift she-camel,

Powerfully built, like a male ostrich, broad-cheeked and obedient,

God be with you! Keep near the land of Qayn and ʿĀmir,

And Ṣakhr and Fakhr, steadfast in resolve and joyful,

Until at al-Maqṣariyya you see a spring encampment,

And abundant rain, ever pouring, steadily falling.

There, then, cast aside the saddle-bindings, the saddle, and night travel,

And the crossing of deserts, and praise Nimrān with your verse.
