Camel litters and saddles have not stirred longing in my heart,
Nor have landmarks and traces saddened me.
ولاnor أُسائلI question أهلَthe people of النجدthe uplands إنif نجدواthey go upland
ولاnor أسائلI question أهلَthe people of الغورthe lowlands إنif غارواthey descend to the lowlands
Nor do I question the uplanders when they go upland,
Nor do I question the lowlanders when they descend.

A wolf may roar when no lion is around it,
And the ass neighs if it encounters no dangers.

I rejoiced in blessed Yemen when it belonged wholly
To Ibn al-Rasul, with no troubles to cloud it.

فماso not بقيremained منof بنيthe sons of البظراءِthe uncircumcised woman ديارُa single inhabitant
And in it there had been menial hirelings, riffraff;
So not a soul remained of the uncircumcised woman's sons.

But one solitary wart remained, a cause for reproach.
And fire is an easy mount, but disgrace is not.

If you say, 'No sultan remains except Umar,'
They say, 'Not so: Sultan Ammar remains too.'

Or you say, 'There is no castle but Dumlu'a's castle,'
They say, 'On Yumayn's summit stand the castle and the dwelling.'

Or you say, 'How fine is the district of Ju'a!'
They say, 'Yet no district compares with Dhubhan.'

فالكلبfor the dog حيثwherever خلاit is alone بالعظمِwith the bone جَبّارa tyrant
So seize Yumayn, and do not accept his excuses;
For a dog is a tyrant wherever it is alone with a bone.

Two sultans have never agreed in one land.
Can a keen sword and another enter one scabbard?

Whenever you are away, he casts his eye on Dumlu'a,
And keeps reciting verse while the cups go round.

And Ibn al-Muhalla fills him with hopes of a fierce battle;
The two are in accord—a drum and a pipe.

My lord, do not underestimate him, for Ibn Muljam once
Struck at Haydar—and a traitor is a traitor.

What a vile hidden thing beneath the bedding—a louse!
And a dam's worst lurking foe is the mouse beneath it.
