    فاسمع شكيتها وانظر تجنّيها

    Su'da reproaches me for her being far away;

so hear her complaint and consider her unjust accusations.

She said, “You were content with my distance from you.” Had they accepted

ransom from me, I would have ransomed her with my own life.

Jacob did not weep, when his sons came at night

without a brother, as I wept the day I lost her.

Between Su'da and me stand two witnesses to

what once was: Nu'man's spreading tree and its valley.

In the days when we were together beneath its shade,

I embraced her and filled my mouth from hers.

And my cheek lay upon her cheek, and upon her upper chest

my forearm, and my shirt's button lay amid her collarbones.

Then we parted, and no news of her has reached me.

O Su'd, where has her driver urged the weary camels on with his song?

I question the lightning about her as it flickers,

and the clouds, where their morning masses have grown dense and fringed.

Even the doves in the branches, if they coo

for their mates, you would think the gray doves had her in mind.

By God, I swear that, because I remember her,

the time for my prayer passes me by, and I do not perform it.

Oh, would that separation could bring its remoteness near,

or that it could hear the caller, so I might call to it.

O traveler bound for the East, I have a request, and with me

is a message—perhaps you will deliver it on my behalf.

Convey my longing to Umar, and recount to him

my yearning, while tears stream from the corners of your eye.

Whenever the wind blows, I rise to send it:

O wind, if you reach Sana'a, greet her.

And if you pass by a palace where Umar dwells,

then kiss the earth in reverence and veneration.

And behold there a king in residence—or an angel—

whose least gift is the world and all within it.

    حتى القصائد قد ضاعت قوافيها

    Say: “The Tihamah lowlands have been desolate since you departed;

even the poems have lost their rhymes.

    بمن أعزَّكَ لا أذْلَلَت أهليها

    Poems are an adornment to dynasties;

by the one who exalted you, do not abase their poets.”
