ألمdid ... not? ترنيyou see me عُلّقتُI became enamored of ليلىLayla خَليلةًa beloved woman
وقدand indeed عُلقتshe became enamored of ليلىLayla سِوايsomeone other than me خليلاa beloved man
Have you not seen me smitten with Layla, my beloved,
Did you not see me hung up for Layla, my beloved
while Layla is smitten with someone other than me as her lover?
While Layla was hung up for me as a beloved
أحبُّI wish لهاfor her أنthat لاnot تزالُshe cease to be صحيحةًhealthy
وتهوىand she desires بجسميfor my body أنْthat يكونَit be عليلاailing
I wish for her always to remain healthy,
I wish for her to always remain faithful
while she wishes my body to be ailing.
And that she longs for my body to be frail
ولوand if قيلit were said ليto me سلْask مَاwhatever أردتyou desired منamong المنىwishes
لماwould not أخترتُI chose غيرَother than العَامريةal-ʿAmiriyya سولاa wish
And were I told, 'Ask for any wish you desire,'
And if I were told, “Ask for whatever you wish”
I would choose none but al-ʿAmiriyya as my wish.
I would choose nothing but Al-Amiriyah
فياso, oh ليتنيif only I عاودتُI returned to ليلىLayla وَوَصْلَهَاand union with her
وياand oh ليتَهاif only she عاجتshe turned aside عليّtoward me قليلاa little while
Oh, if only I could return to Layla and be united with her,
Oh, if only I returned to Layla and reconciled with her
and if only she would turn my way for a little while!
And oh, if only she lingered with me a little
لئنif indeed عيرتنيyou reproach me أنthat أذلّI am humbled بحبهاby love for her
فأيّthen what مُحِبlover لاnot يكونis ذليلاhumbled
If you reproach me for being humbled by love for her,
If she rebukes me for debasing myself out of love for her
then what lover is not humbled?
What lover does not become submissive?
وإنيand indeed I لأرضَىI am surely content بالخيالِwith the phantom إذاwhen سرىit travels by night
وبالبرقand with the lightning منهاfrom her إذwhen يلوحit gleams كليلاfaint
And I am indeed content with her phantom when it comes by night,
I find solace in fantasizing about her when she travels
and with lightning from her when it glimmers faintly.
And when lightning flashes from her like an anklet
أُحبُّI love ابنةthe daughter الأوسيal-Awsi وهيwhile she is بخيلةmiserly
وأيّand what مليحٍfair one لاnot يكونis بخيلاmiserly
I love the daughter of al-Awsi, though she is miserly,
I love the daughter of Al-Ausi though she is stingy
and what fair one is not miserly?
What beauty is not a little stingy?
وإنْand if هيshe ملّتshe grows weary أوor تخلتْshe withdraws فإنّنيthen indeed I
أحنُّI yearn إليهاfor her بكرةًin the morning وأصيلاand in late afternoon
And if she grows weary or turns away, then I
Even if she got bored or abandoned me
yearn for her morning and evening.
I would still yearn for her morning and evening
وإنand if طلبتshe asks منيfrom me بديلاًa replacement فإننيthen indeed I
وعيشِكby your life فيهاregarding her لاnot أريدI want بديلاa replacement
And if she asks me for a replacement, then I—
And if she asked me for someone else instead
by your life—want no replacement for her.
By your life! I do not want anyone else
