وماand not أضربI draw الأمثالthe comparisons منfor أجلthe sake of زلةa lapse
إليكtoward you ولاnor ذنبٍan offense عظيمgrave فعلتهI committed it
And I do not draw comparisons because of a lapse
It was not for a slip that I gave examples
toward you, nor because of a grave offense I committed.
Nor for a great sin that you committed
ولكننيbut I حُمّلتُI was burdened with قولاًa statement ملفقاًfabricated
عليَّupon me دماءُthe blood البُدْنِthe sacrificial camels إنif كنتُI was قلتهُI said it
But a fabricated utterance was attributed to me;
But I was blamed unjustly
the blood of sacrificial camels is due from me if I said it.
My blood spilled if I said it
وقدand indeed كانthere was ليfor me فيin أرضthe land of أشعرَAshʿar منزلٌa dwelling
بهin it الرحبُample room والترحيبُand welcome مهماwhenever نزلتُهI lodged in it
And I once had a dwelling in the land of Ashʿar,
And I had an abode in a land nobler than Ash’ar
with ample room and welcome whenever I lodged there.
Wherever I stayed, there was spaciousness and welcome

إذاwhenever رمتُI sought منهfrom it موضعَthe station of النجمthe star نلتهُI attained it
And among my people I held an honored rank;
And I had an exalted status among my people
whenever I aspired from that rank to a star’s station, I attained it.
If I aimed for the stars, I would grasp them
فياso, O ليتَif only إنيindeed I لمdid not أربّI rear ابنson of ملجمMuljam
ولمand did not أكفلI support ابنson of النضرal-Naḍr فيمنamong those whom كفلتهI supported him
So, if only I had not reared Ibn Muljam,
So, how I wish I had not raised the son of Maljam
nor supported Ibn al-Naḍr among those I supported.
Nor sponsored the son of Nadr among those I sponsored
فماso not ضرنيharmed me إلاَّexcept الذيthe one whom قدalready نفعتهI benefited him
ولاand not حَطَّنيbrought me low إلاّexcept الذيthe one whom قدalready رفعتهI raised him
For none harmed me but the one I had benefited,
None harmed me save those I benefited
and none brought me low but the one I had raised.
None debased me save those I raised high

وتصديقand believing فيَّabout me الزيلعيal-Zaylaʿī واختهand his sister
How strange to disbelieve Joseph’s brothers,
How strange is the lying of Joseph’s brothers
yet believe al-Zaylaʿī and his sister about me!
And the truth in me from Zil’ay and his sister

A part of Hūd ibn ʿĀbir has indeed been severed;
I have become estranged from my kinsman Hud
Hūd ibn ʿĀbir is certainly dear to me.
It grieves me, estranged from Hud Ibn Aabir

هوit is القولُthe word عندamong القومthe people والدستand the seat of authority دستهhis seat of authority
And I came to be far from my people, while his word
And I parted from my people, gone far
is the word that counts among the people, and the seat of authority is his.
Yet his is the prevailing view among the people

And it is nothing but luck: a lion barks,
It is but fate barking Zhigam
a barker roars when his fortune rises.
A howling dog when his luck turns
فإنand if كانthere is للدجالfor the Dajjāl (false messiah) وقتa time معينٌappointed

And if the Dajjāl has an appointed time,
So if the Antichrist has a set time
then this is the Dajjāl, and the time is his.
This is the Antichrist, and the time is his time

And what worth would he have without another? For indeed,
Were it not for Him, he would have no might
when a dog smells musk, its anus gurgles.
For when a dog smells musk, it yelps
