إلاّexcept that جرىflowed ماءwater مُقْلتيَّof my two eyes دَمَاas blood
Never did I recall the dune and the landmark
Whenever I mention the sand dune and the banner,
but the tears of my two eyes flowed as blood.
My tears flow like water.
وَلاَand not بَدتْappeared ليto me النَقاthe dune خِيمٌtents
إلاَّexcept that فقدُتُI missed تلكمُthose (addressing you all) الخِيماthe tents
Nor did tents appear to me upon the dune
Whenever the camel litters appear to me,
without my missing those tents.
I yearn for those litters.

I yearn for ʿAmir, though their ravine
They marched to settle ‘Amir and his people,
is parched—even were I to perish of thirst.
Though it be a barren land.

I keep faith when they neglect it; I have pledges
I pasture their herd when they are away,
that are honored when the people abandon their pledges.
Just as they pasture my herd when I am away.

And in the morning's camel litters is a slender woman,
In the mornings, she has well-shaped ankles,
whose form beauty has divided into portions.
As if beauty itself divided her form.

If you sip her lips, you will find thick white honey;
Her mouth tastes like pure wine,
or behold her cheek, you will find a blaze.
Or her cheek feels like velvet.

Her lower part is a dune, and her upper part
Her legs are like sand dunes,
a full moon, with a tender arak bough between them.
Her face a full moon, and her waist is between them.

I feel regret, since her riding camels set out by night,
I regret when her camel saddle departed,
yet Layla's heart felt no regret for me.
And Layla’s heart toward me feels no regret.

By God, Jimam has let down
By God, her loose black hair
her coal-black hair like clusters of grapes.
Cascades like grape clusters.

So tell her: “That frail man—do you not
Say to her, O weak one,
fear the Lord of heaven regarding him—do you not?”
Do you not fear the Lord of the heavens?

And beware when she arches her eyebrows,
And beware if she arches her eyebrows,
for if her eye gazes toward you, it shoots.
For if her eyelash aims at you, it shoots.

And how dear Mawzaʿ is to us! For there
And she came to us in a slow gait, and through her
how often have we seen the noble and the generous!
We saw generosity and nobility.

a valley like the Euphrates when it overflows.
By a valley like the flooding Euphrates.
