وحلالَه والجيرةَ الحُلاّلا
He recalled al-Nukhayl and its sweet, flowing water,
He recalled the palm trees, their water and lawful livelihood
And its encampments and the neighbors dwelling there.
And their beautiful, permitted neighborhoods

وشجاه وَمْضُ البرق حينَ تلالاَ
The gray doves lamented for him, and his heart sang;
The leaves rustled for him, so his heart sang
The lightning’s flash stirred his sorrow as it gleamed.
And lightning in the hills enchanted him

Poor soul left whom he loved, with nothing to his name
Patience; now he mourns the ruined camps.
Just patience, now lamenting the ruins

He calls to the old haunts of Zaynab, daughter of Malik,
Calling out to Zainab, Malik's daughter
And questions them, but they give his question no reply.
Asking after her, though she brought only sorrow

By God, oh cool breeze, come to us
Where are the loved ones? They have set out anew.
Where are the loved ones? Time to move on

And of the camels traveling by night—if only I
If only I could sacrifice myself for the beauties
Could ransom the camels bearing beauty!
Bearing their gorgeous beauty

By the north wind in her stance, swaying

Showing me honey-sweet lips and a supple, swaying form.
Showing me the sweetest honey

She wept, raining pearls on narcissus
So with them he watered the wine-red hue upon his cheek.
Watering its cheek with a stream

وكذا الليالي بالأمور حَبَالاَ
I parted from him—the hardest thing was parting from him.
I left her, and left the dearest thing, parted
And so the nights are pregnant with events.
As nights leave all things in time

And how long will you reproach me, and how can you blame me?
Why do you blame me? How can you rebuke me?
I heed neither reproach nor the reproachers.
When I cannot obey blame and rebuke

And you reproached one who does not heed reproach.
And blamed one who cannot hear blame

Oh rumbling lightning in the night’s gloom
Before dawn, urging on the heavy, pouring rain,
Dawn and torrential rain

Tell the clouds to trail the skirts of rain
Tell the rain clouds to drag the hems of life
Where Muhammad trailed his garments’ skirts.
Where Muhammad once dragged his cloak’s hem
