at al-Raqmatayn; tears stream from my eye.

In the days when youth was fresh and fair,

through union with the one I love, and my fortune was advancing.

I have given up youth's waywardness; once I had

in it correspondence and freely sent reproaches.

How often I ran with youth as the east breeze runs,

and a bright-eyed one with kohl-dark lids gave me tawny wine.

who censures men for stinginess yet is stingy himself.

Far from it! I have a self-restrained soul and an ambition

that even al-Simak the Unarmed approaches only from below.

denies a kindness; they give lavishly, and I rejoice.

how wretched the lodging there, and how wretched the lodgers!

for not even a dog does what he does.

for dung is put in the midst of dungheaps.

Do you blame a people, O hyena of the wastes, when you were

yesterday seeking shade among their houses?

They enriched you when your hand did not know what wealth was,

and gave you drink when no water flowed among your people.

By God, none is like al-Jabh ('the Beehive'), if you compare him,

except, in appearance, the vilest Ibn al-‘Alif.

And I think Bahdal's cock had been made erect

in the middle of the road, with your mother's head beneath.

O Ibn al-‘Alif, stones would have crushed your mouth.

horses there, they call it white-blazed and white-stockinged.

Verse like a drum's hollow: inside it there is not

a thing, yet it keeps the ears occupied.

By God, they gave you gifts not because you excel

at poetry; rather, one who maintains ties receives gifts.

I marveled when they said, 'So-and-so is a poet,'

and exchanged winks; I wondered: why are you not ashamed?
