وأدنوand I draw near إلىto منْone who ليْسَis not بالمتدانيdrawing near
I suffer for love of Layla—and how I suffer!
I suffer the passion of Layla, how I suffer!
And I draw near to one who will not draw near.
And I approach one who is not to be approached.
وأرعىand I cherish لهاfor her أيامَthe days إذwhen هيَshe جارتيmy neighbor
وإذand when خدْرُهاher curtained tent المضروبُpitched قيدwithin range of عَيَانيmy sight
And I cherish for her sake the days when she was my neighbor,
And I tend to her during the days when she was my neighbor,
And when her pitched, curtained tent was within my sight.
When her cheek, smitten, had tied my eyes' rein.
وماand not خُنْتُI betrayed ليْليLayla يَعَلمُknows اللهGod عهدَهاher pledge
ولاand not مِلْتُI inclined للواشيtoward the slanderer غداةَthe morning when لحانيhe reproached me
Nor did I betray Layla's pledge—God knows.
I was never disloyal to Layla, God knows my pledge to her.
Nor did I heed the slanderer the morning he reproached me.
And I never wearied of whispering lovingly to her after we had parted.
ولاand not غيّرتنيchanged me شقةٌthe vast stretch of البُعْدِseparation بعدَهاafter her departure
إذاwhen غيَّرchanged الإِخوانَfriends جورَthe cruelty of زمانِtime
Nor did the long stretch of separation change me after her departure,
Nor did any absence, after she left, change me
When time's cruelty changed friends.
When time's tyranny changed even the truest of friends.
ولاand not اعتدتُI was accustomed to تسيدَsleeplessness (uncertain reading) الجفونِthe eyelids وإنماbut rather
جفتنيshe forsook me ليلىLayla والمنامُand sleep جفانيforsook me
Nor was I accustomed to sleepless eyelids; rather,
Nor did I accustom my eyes to sleep, but it was Layla who made them sleepless and wakeful.
Layla forsook me, and sleep forsook me.
Passion called her when passion called me to her,

فَلبَّتْso she answered كماjust as لبَيْتُI answered حينَwhen دَعانيit called me
Love called her when love called me to her,
So she answered just as I answered when called.
So she answered, as I answered when it called me.
How many a lover is not loved,

And how many a lover is not himself beloved,
And the time turned against one whose state did not please it!
And one tender toward someone who has no pity for my plight.
O my two friends from Sa'd ibn Abl Waqqas

My two friends from Sa'd ibn Bint, you both slept,
I spent the night tossing about restlessly while you slept.
And I spent the night watching the lightning that came from Yemen.
Had you been as lovesick and sleepless as I,
فلوso if كنتماyou two were مِثليlike me مشوْقينِfilled with longing أوْor معيwith me

Had you both, like me, been longing, or been with me,
Your sickness for her would have kept you awake when it made me sleepless.
Its nightly passage would have grieved you both when it grieved me.
Help me against my deep cares and thank

علىfor ذاكthat منthe One who عافاكماspared you both وبلانيand afflicted me
Help me bear the grief within me, and give thanks
Him who cured you while allowing me to be tried.
For that to the One who spared you both and afflicted me.
For a friend is one who shares my pain

For my friend is one who shares my sorrow
And suffers with me the strokes of time.
And shares with me in time's afflictions.
From Qayl came a gift to me, to turn

A thunderous crash came to me from the Yemeni ruler,
The head of a black lion gray.
Enough to gray the head of al-Aswad ibn Qunan.
And a howdah of Dhul Rummah to say farewell,
وزأرةand a roar of ضرغامa lion ببيشةin Bishah لودعاhad it called out

And a lion's roar in Bishah—had it sounded
That would have made the roofs of Oman collapse.
In Najran, the roofs of Oman would have shattered.

His voice, and how much good news did he bring me!
His bounty, when so much kindness from him has reached me?
Who am I to deny the sun its light

And who am I to deny the sun its light,
And detract from the bounty of a pouring cloud?
And belittle the bounty of rain pouring in torrents?
What they related about me and Abu Bakr
ومَاand not كانwas منيfrom me فيconcerning أبيAbu (father of) بكرِBakr ماwhat رَوواthey reported
ولكنَّbut شأنيmy standing عنهcompared with him أحقرُmore insignificant شأنيmy standing
What they reported concerning Abu Bakr never came from me;
Did not happen, and my affair with him is too trivial.
But beside him my standing is utterly insignificant.
Shall I ride the waves of doom deliberately,
أأركبُwould I ride أمواجُthe waves of الهلاكِdestruction تعمداًdeliberately
وأفتحُand open شدقيmy mouth والرّماحُwhile the spears دوانيnear at hand
Would I deliberately ride the waves of destruction,
Opening my mouth while spears prod me?
And open my mouth while spears are close at hand?
And eat the flesh of snakes to satiation
وآكلُand eat لحمthe flesh of الأفعوانِthe great serpent تشبّعاًto satiate myself
ولوeven if مَسَّtouched جلديmy skin جلدَهُits skin لكفانيit would suffice for me
And eat a great serpent's flesh to fill myself,
When just touching their skin would suffice me?
When merely touching its skin with mine would be enough?
And show ingratitude for the kindness
واكفرُand deny احسانَthe kindness of الذيthe one who فيin زمانِهِhis time
عرفتُI became known وأعمىand blinded الحاسدينthe envious دُخَانيmy smoke
And deny the kindness of him in whose time
In whose time I became known, to the envy of foes?
I became known, and my smoke blinded the envious?
And cut off my nose, which is the seat of my pride,

وأقطعُand sever كفيmy hand عامداًdeliberately ببنانيwith my fingers
And cut off my nose, though it is the seat of my pride,
Purposely, with my own hands?
And deliberately sever my hand with my own fingers?
No! By Him whose Holy House

علىon مضمراتٍlean mounts كالقسيّlike bows حوانيcurved
Indeed, by Him whose House the chanting pilgrims visited,
The throngs of pilgrims circumambulate like the orbit of Saturn,
On lean mounts, curved like bows,
When my fingers wrote those words

ولاand not قالsaid مَاwhat قالsaid الوشاةthe slanderers لِسانيmy tongue

My fingertips never wrote those words,
My tongue spoke not what the slanderers said.
Nor did my tongue say what the slanderers claimed.
But they are the sons of Jacob who came

But they, like Jacob's sons, came forward
With a wolf's blood on a coat.
With a wolf and a garment ringed with crimson blood.
They wronged and injured on that day, and suggested
وَغَرّواand they deceived وضرواand they harmed يومَon the day of ذاكthat وأوهِمواand they were misled

And they deceived and harmed that day, and were misled,
Falsehoods, misleading the course of truth after its clarification.
And missed the path of truth after it was made clear.
How strange that my sanctities should be made lawful
ومِنْand among عجبٍwondrous things أنْthat تستحلyou deem lawful محارميmy inviolable rights

And it is strange that you should deem my sacred rights violable
By so-and-so's writing or so-and-so's speech!
On the strength of so-and-so's writing or so-and-so's words.
It was said in al-Baṭḥāʾ that Ahmad was a sorcerer,

And in al-Batha Ahmad was called a sorcerer,
And people said to al-Muhaymin he was an imposter,
And some said the Guardian had a counterpart.

And the followers of the Messiah fashioned in his likeness
A cross, though the Spirit of God is not mortal.
A cross, though God's Spirit does not perish.
I cannot transform their deeds, though they split the staff

وسخطٌand wrath أتىcame منfrom غيرother than زلةِa fault of جانيan offender
No power avails against it—a deed that split the staff,
And provoked wrath without any slip of mine.
And wrath that came without an offender's fault.
Vain fools defamed me unjustly,

A liar hurled his fabrication at me and took cover—
And God repelled what they threw at me when they threw it.
A false charge! May God strike him as he struck me.
Truth has an answer, and falsehood is a kind of raving;

And truth has a face that cannot be denied; rather,
The words of enemies are a type of madness.
The enemies' talk is nothing but a kind of delirium.

Peace be upon you, Abu Bakr; as ever,
Have always been the best melodies for visitors.
Your dwellings are the finest of dwellings for visitors.

I came, my companions divided between one dissuading me and trying to turn me back,
And another who loosened the reins for travel.
And another who loosened my reins for the journey.

And in my soul were longings, and in my heart was awe,
For passion and fear are different.
And indeed, love and fear are at odds.

And behind me, O son of the Ash'arites, are children,
Like the kittens of a wildcat, each wanting to see me.
Like downy sandgrouse chicks, each longing to see me.

And an old man bent by calamities, and an old woman;
And an old woman to whom it is hard if I depart.
It pains them if my dwelling is far away.

With eyes flowing copiously with tears.
Has tears from both eyes streaming down his cheek.

Be charitable to them, or to me for their sake,
And calm hearts beating tumultuously.
And still hearts that beat so wildly.

Grant safety—how often you have stilled a needy man's terror!
The fear of one in need! Set free -
And grant release—how often you have relieved an offender's distress!
How often you have released the anguish of a distressed soul!
