Yearnings and longings have stirred you to poetry,

And feelings and sensibilities have returned to you.

Stay at ease, for no resentment lives in your heart,

And sleep content, for your eyes shed no tears.

All beings in the countryside have greeted you there:

The wind plays music, and the meadow applauds.

And on the farms are herds of many kinds:

Sheep and goats, cattle and she-camels.

And song, like poetry, has its marketplaces.

And birds twitter joyfully in their nests.

As though its evening were sunrise to the eye.

    له إلى الله إخبات وإطراق

    Humbly submitting to God, with its head bowed;

While the eyes of the settlement's shepherds have fallen asleep.

So tell whoever, in his quest for rest,

Is drawn toward the cities by feeling [reading uncertain]:

Leave the cities; do not be deceived by their glitter,

For their air is murky, suffocating like gas.

And its air is an antidote to intractable illness.

Nor any horizons on earth like their horizons.

Look: among the huts you will find a table,

Dishes sway upon it, laden with food,

Laid out for humankind, without restriction,

By a hand that is all generosity and free giving.

For none but You is the creator of this bounty.
