Woe to you, death announcement proclaimed by the telegraph!

So Islam was alarmed by it, and the East was shaken.

And the radio repeated it from every land,

So ears were deafened by it, and speech was stilled.

And the rivers of every newspaper overflowed with it,

As tears poured like rain from the corners of our eyes.

We have lost a just king; right guidance shone forth

Through his fairness in judgment, and truth triumphed.

He upheld God's bounds, with the sword as a deterrent,

And religion as law; thus the people submitted to him.

And he kept the pilgrims to the House safe, after

The Bedouins had wrought havoc in the Hijaz and the roads were blocked.

And he cleft the earth and drew forth gushing water

Throughout all regions, its flow never ceasing.

And he brought forth the earth's gold, glinting with riches,

And shining to the beholder as lightning shines.

And he set abundant wells of oil gushing,

With prospecting equipment that no depth could thwart.

By your life, oil is indeed wealth for the people,

And a precious treasure, like no other treasure.

So through it the land of the Arabian Peninsula grew fertile again,

As though barrenness had never spread there, nor sustenance grown scarce.

Peace upon the lion of the Arabian Peninsula in the earth,

Shrouded in fragrant remembrance, while truth laments him.

He has indeed left lion cubs behind to guard his den,

Fierce beasts, skilled in guarding all they must defend.

And in the blessed successor lies solace for his people,

And glad tidings of a star the horizon has raised among them.

Lo, O protector of the Arabian Peninsula, we

Salute you on behalf of a people whose strength bondage has worn away.

You showed compassion to whoever came from that people as an emigrant,

So no neck among them turned back toward their homeland.

And you favored our delegations with benevolence,

Of manifold benefit, through which the breach was mended.

So praise upon praise, which throats keep uttering,

To glorify your bounty, as gray doves coo.

And thanks upon thanks for your preeminence in generosity,

And all the House of Saud hold that precedence.

Successors to heroes and descendants of defenders,

Their branch flourished, just as their root had flourished.

And we are nothing but brothers, despite our separation,

Full brothers in Islam, with no difference between us.

And one may hope for the East's scattered parts to be reunited,

As one hopes for a slave's release from his bondage.
