I shall keep to my home, content with my livelihood,

I will settle in my home, content with my livelihood,

I shall cleave to my home, content with my livelihood,

a companion to my books, drawing some of their light.

A companion to my books, drawing on their light.

A companion to my books, kindling a flame from their light,

وأخرج من بيتي لتعليم فتية

وأخرج من بيتي لتعليم فتية

بمدرسة آوتهم في حجورها

بمدرسة آوتهم في حجورها

And I shall leave my home to teach young men

And I will go out from my home to teach the youths,

And I go forth from my house to instruct the youth

at a school that has sheltered them in its bosom.

Sheltering them in a school nestled in my care.

In a school that has sheltered them within its embrace.

فإن أثمر التعليم فيهم ثماره

فإن أثمر التعليم فيهم ثماره

فذاك منى نفسي وأقصى سرورها

فذاك منى نفسي وأقصى سرورها

For if teaching bears its fruits in them,

If education bears fruit in them,

If then the teaching bears its fruit among them,

then that is what my soul desires, and its greatest joy.

That will be the greatest joy my soul can know.

That is my soul's desire and its utmost joy.

وإن تكن الأخرى فحسبي غنيمة

وإن تكن الأخرى فحسبي غنيمة

براءة نفسي واحتساب أجورها

براءة نفسي واحتساب أجورها

And if it turns out otherwise, sufficient gain for me is

And if not, my reward is the integrity

But if it proves otherwise, then sufficient prize for me

my soul's freedom from blame and the hope of its rewards from God.

Of my soul and the merit earned for the attempt.

Is my soul's clear conscience and the reckoning of its reward.
