أيها الهاتف ساجلت حماما
قابعاcrouched فيin الوكرthe nest بالعزلةof solitude هاماenamored
قابعا في الوكر بالعزلة هاما
O caller, you have vied with a dove,
O you who calls out, you have vied with a dove,
Crouched in the nest, enamored of solitude.
That crouches in its nest, wandering distractedly in solitude.
جاءهreached him منكfrom you كتابa letter فاخرsplendid
جاءه منك كتاب فاخر
وقريضand verse صفwas arranged كالعقدlike a necklace نظاماin ordered sequence
وقريض صف كالعقد نظاما
A splendid letter from you reached him,
A magnificent missive came to him from you,
And verse arranged in order like a necklace.
And poetry arranged like a well-strung necklace.
ياoh لهاfor it (exclamatory) منof تحفةa precious gift عيديةfor Eid
يا لها من تحفة عيدية
قدرهاits worth عندin the eyes of ذويthose possessing الذوقtaste تسامىhas risen high
قدرها عند ذوي الذوق تسامى
What an exquisite Eid gift!
Oh, what a masterpiece of an Eid gift,
Its worth has soared in the eyes of those with taste.
Whose worth soars high among those of refined taste.
ياO كتابيmy letter سرgo إلىto باتنةBatna
يا كتابي سر إلى باتنة
واتand visit عبدAbd (servant) القادرal-Qadir (the All-Powerful) الشهمthe noble الهماماthe valiant
وات عبد القادر الشهم الهماما
O my letter, go to Batna,
O my letter, travel forth to Batna,
And visit noble, valiant Abd al-Qadir.
And go to Abdelkader, the gallant and magnanimous leader.
قلsay لهto him حييتmay you be greeted منيfrom me بالرضىwith goodwill
قل له حييت مني بالرضى
تبوأتyou have taken your place منof العزhonor سناماa summit
تبوأت من العز سناما
Tell him: I greet you with goodwill;
Tell him: You are greeted by me with all goodwill,
You have taken your place at the summit of honor.
And you have ascended to the very pinnacle of glory.
بالهدىwith right guidance عيدتyou celebrated Eid عيداan Eid زاهراradiant
بالهدى عيدت عيدا زاهرا
وعلىand in accordance with السنةthe Sunnah أتممتyou completed الصياماthe fasting
وعلى السنة أتممت الصياما
With right guidance, you celebrated a radiant Eid,
Through divine guidance, you have celebrated a radiant Eid,
And in accordance with the Sunnah, you completed the fast.
And in accordance with the Sunnah, you completed the fast.
آدناhas burdened us الشملthe gathering التئاماin reuniting فاصطبرso be patient
آدنا الشمل التئاما فاصطبر
واقتنعand be content بالكتبwith letters للشملfor the gathering التئاماa reunion
واقتنع بالكتب للشمل التئاما
Reunion has proved hard for us, so be patient,
Bringing our physical reunion to pass is a heavy burden, so be patient,
And be content to find reunion in letters.
And be content with correspondence as our form of gathering.
واكتفand be satisfied اليومtoday بنجواناwith our private talk علىdespite
واكتف اليوم بنجوانا على
بعدناour distance، وفقتmay you be granted success بدأat the outset وختاماand at the close
بعدنا، وفقت بدأ وختاما
And let our private talk suffice today, despite
Suffice today with our intimate discourse, despite
Our distance—may success attend you from beginning to end.
Our distance; may you be granted success in every beginning and end.
