A wretched, drowsy man appeared before my eyes,

    On the earth at dawn, in threadbare clothes;

Crouched on his legs, hunched at the belly,

And back, his body drooping, his youth withered.

So it stirred some of my sorrow, and some of—

    As a matchstick rouses fire.

    والشعر والعبرة جهد المصاب

    And I passed from verse to tears;

Verse and tears are all the afflicted can muster.

I stood by his head, calling to him,

    Hoping to receive some answer.

O you who take shelter in a hollow,

    At a mountain's foot, where ravines meet;

O you who have fallen upon your face,

    Beneath the sky's skin, above the dust;

O you huddled in your ragged garment,

    Like a hedgehog set upon by dogs;

Ease your grief, for I do not sup-

-pose this haze comes from anything else.

Does your sleep now fail us,

    Or you—or are you tough-skinned?

Even stones do not act as you do, sleeping on

Your side, though stones are deaf and hard.

Are you not simply a human like us,

Or a jinn from whom the veil has fallen?

No, rather a poor man; you found no mercy

Among the owners of domed villas.

Their bellies are full, and their purses too,

While your belly is hollow, your milk-skins empty.

Their sleep is sweet, and their feelings too,

While you are frightened in a desolate wilderness.

Fate's tyranny folded you into a hollow,

Beside the mountain, like a rolled scroll.

You stayed there all day in

    Suffering, poverty, hardship, and dejection,

Until, when the hour of sleep arrived,

And night's darkness became like a raven,

You lowered your eyes, seeking to doze,

    While sleeplessness in your eyes was molten copper;

And you bent like a strung bow,

With its arrows, brandished for combat,

Your neck bowed toward the earth by

    Your worries—and worry humbles necks.

As though your night were the life of a man

    Warning a people for whom there is no repentance;

As though your eye, in its sleeplessness,

Were a spying eye upon us, watching every door.

I saw in your person what appalled me,

And it brought me grief and agitation.

After you alarmed me this morning,

Can food delight me and drink taste sweet?

I swear there is no comfort in life

Except beguiling hopes, like a mirage.

    And people—woe to people!—are at a standstill,

Or coming round their hopes, or going away.

And the self rules them, and it never

Ceases calling them to every vice.

But if you probe their deceit,

It is, by God, an astonishing thing:

Deceit that imitates truth in its form,

And their falsehood imitates what is right.

Were it not for guidance from some of the rightly guided,

I would swear that among people there are only wolves.

Is it time for me to depart? I am stifled by

My stay, against my will, in this wasteland.

How can life be pleasant among a people

Who withhold from the poor their surplus beyond the prescribed minimum?

As though they had no moral obligation,

And none among them believed in the Reckoning.

    O wealthy ones, rise to

Aid the poor, for poverty has struck,

And harmed your brothers, and taken hold

Of them; poverty is the foundation of ruin.
