Love's fugitive is guided by a star from the earring,

When he strays in a night of straight, coal-black hair.

If the script on love's pages has become obscure,

I have a sigh like vowel marks, and tears like dots.

The vanguard of the army of cheek-down came raiding,

With a green banner made of that speckling.

With it we drove the reproachers' horses away from us,

As though, in that blundering, they were a dim-sighted she-camel.

I folded my love for them into the recesses of my inmost self,

As a sheet of paper was once folded over writing.

Their deserted traces lie between my ribs, not at al-Liwa,

And they are in my heart, not by the dune or the sand's edge.

Love for the fair, both newfound and longstanding,

Is firmly knotted and bound at the edges of my heart.

The road of love is hard for everyone who steps forth

To attain the maidens; his judgment is mistaken.

I hoped to reclaim my heart from them, for they

Rescinded the bargain; my sale had been made on a condition.

When he appears, he resembles a gazelle reaching upward.

So with it Moses charged against the company of Copts.

Is it wine he has revealed to us, or saliva being beheld?

And has a star appeared, or is that part of the necklace?

My tears became unfettered, while my heart is bound,

And poured over my body, submerging it beyond measure.

Prostrate and ailing, I receive no pity for my plight

From a beloved of lovely flank, whose stature is like a supple shoot.

A physician well versed in the ribs and their sickness,

And in whatever blend of yearning lies within my heart.

He called me pierced when his glance shot at my heart

With an arrow that neither overshot the heart nor missed.

I began taking my grievance to the dauntless one,

For he has not been slow to exact vengeance in this world.

His sword-baldric is long in the thick of battle,

When the daring warrior retreats in that contest.

Rare gifts of goodness from his bounty stand ready,

Readily available to the visiting delegation, their string untied.

His generosity has overflowed, and the people around his Nile

Are like those drawing water from the river's bank.

Many kinds of favors are attained by a seeker,

And he assails the corrupt with a whip.

His cheerfulness when giving is like

Morning; slender maidens are not like gray-haired women.

His name was extolled in East and West, and so submitted

Despite the distance, the princes of the non-Arabs and the Nabataeans.

The embroidery of lofty honors shone above his head,

When they enfolded the people of virtue in a cloak.

I find my tongue moist with praise of him,

For oh, how often he has watered it in the harshest drought!

From him the seas of giving overflowed; and before this,

He rose to the rank of eminence through withholding and bestowing.

We molded our souls to praise the minister,

So the fragrance of praise wafted like costus incense.

May his rising stars never cease swooping down

Upon the vile army of his foes, like speckled snakes.

May the drums of joy never cease to be beaten around him,

By the standing of creation's intercessor, his family, and his grandson.
