Was love anything but tears racing

Down the cheek, and fires between the ribs,

And misery, pain, passion, and burning anguish,

And longing for the face of the deceitful beloved?

    فأخمد مجدى نار تلك المطامع

    Indeed, I had hopes of the one I love;

So my honor quenched the fire of those hopes.

But I still recount her beauty,

And recall it whenever a flock of cooing birds passes.

    فما راعني هوج الرياح الزعازع

    I wrapped myself in night's robe, while night was silent;

So the wild, tempestuous winds did not frighten me.

Nor did the clouds' tears appall me: it had already watered

And revived the dead crops—the torrent of my tears.

I find that in love I accept being reproached,

And I hear what my ears will not accept.

And I quail at time's reversals and its treachery,

Yet I had never quailed in the face of calamities.

And in the depths of the nights I watch their stars,

And I marvel at those slumbering eyes.

Nor can sleeplessness bring nearer the one whose phantom has grown distant,

Nor can tears intercede under the law of love.

Nor am I content with union, for it is my affliction,

Nor with separation, for in estrangement lie my tragedies.

Perhaps I am a child of despair, misery, and wretchedness,

And the offspring of those rending cares.
