    Alas for you, my heart! When shall I see you fierce in attack,

    after being submissive and ailing?

    The fates turned against you after amity,

    and passion struck you—so show gracious patience.

    You have willingly strayed from the paths, though you did not

    in former days stray from that path.

    كيف ترضى المقام فيها طويلا

    You have prolonged your stay in a house of humiliation;

    how can you be content to remain there so long?

    Love deceived you—it is a deceitful flash of lightning.

    So be patient; I have longed to depart.

    How can you forget, when you were created proud and unbowed,

    that glory's might shall never fade?

    فكفانا في الحب قالا وقيلا

    We reject, O heart, those base deeds;

    so we have had enough of talk and gossip about love.

    لا تكن للعلاء ذاك المزيلا

    We are a people born to greatness;

    do not be that destroyer of greatness.

    You are more deserving of victory whenever

    love draws its unsheathed sword.

    إنما العار أن تعيش ذليلا

    It is no disgrace if you die with honor;

    the only disgrace is to live in humiliation.
