منwho يداويheals ليfor me فؤاداًa heart
قدhas شكـاcomplained داءan ailment وداءand an ailment
Who will heal for me a heart
Who will cure me a heart
Who will heal my heart,
That has complained of ailment after ailment?
That complained of love-sickness and pain?
Which has complained of ailment after ailment?
سَلْask حبيبيmy beloved كمhow many طبيبٍa physician
حاذقٍskilled بالجهلwith ignorance بـاءcame away
Ask my beloved how many doctors,
Ask my darling, how many a physician
Ask my beloved: how many a physician,
Though skilled, came away ignorant,
Skilled but ignorant has tried in vain
Though skilled, has ended up in ignorance,
عاجزincapable عنof فهمunderstanding دائيmy ailment
مادرىdid not know منfrom أينwhere جاءit came!
Unable to understand my ailment,
To understand my malady
Incapable of understanding my malady,
Not knowing where it came from!
Not knowing whence it came!
Knowing not from whence it came!
لمnot أعدْI continue أرضيI appease فؤاداًa heart
واهـناًweak بالحبby love نـاءweighed down
I no longer appease a heart
No more can I appease a heart
I can no longer appease a heart,
Weak and weighed down by love.
Exhausted by love's joy and bane.
Frail and weighed down by love.
سَلْask غريميmy adversary كمhow many دمـوعٍtears
لمdid not تصـححput right ماwhat أساءhe did wrong
Ask my adversary how many tears
Ask my critic, how many tears
Ask my tormentor: how many tears
Failed to right the wrong he did.
Have failed to wash away the stain
Have failed to mend what he has wronged?
كيفhow أحياI live دونwithout قلبٍa heart
وهْوَwhile he يلهوplays كيفas شاءhe pleases
How can I live without a heart,
Of wrong - how without a heart
How can I live without a heart,
While he plays as he pleases?
That wantons as it will, remain?
While he plays however he pleases?
ياO شهوديmy witnesses أنصفونيgrant me justice
منagainst عنيدa stubborn one قدhas أسـاءdone wrong
O my witnesses, grant me justice
O witnesses, judge between us -
O my witnesses, grant me justice
Against a stubborn one who has done wrong.
Me and the tyrant who caused me pain!
Against a stubborn one who has done wrong.
