ياعصيَّO you reluctant to shed الدمـعِtears أَفْصِحْspeak plainly
ياعصيَّ الدمـعِ أَفْصِحْ
هلْwhether هواكمْyour love منof نصيبيmy share؟
هلْ هواكمْ من نصيبي؟
O you reluctant to weep, speak plainly!
O you who are immune to tears, speak up!
O stubborn of tears, speak plainly,
Is your love my allotted share?
Is it me whom you love?
Is your love to be my destiny?
أمْor ترىyou see فيin غـيرother than حبيmy love
أمْ ترى في غـير حبي
ماanything يسـاويmatches منfrom حبيبِa beloved؟
ما يسـاوي من حبيبِ؟
Or do you see, in a love other than mine,
Or do you see in another's love
Or do you see in a love other than mine
anything from a beloved to match it?
What equals my love for you?
an equally worthy beloved?
قدhas غفاfallen asleep قلـبيmy heart، ودمعيand my tears
قد غفا قلـبي، ودمعي
فيin عيـونيmy eyes كالّلهيبِlike a blaze!
في عيـوني كالّلهيبِ!
My heart has fallen asleep, and my tears
My heart slumbers and my tears
My heart has slumbered, while my tears
are like a blaze in my eyes!
Blaze in my eyes like flames!
burn in my eyes like flames!
فلْتُشـاركْنيso share with me همُـوميmy worries
فلْتُشـاركْني همُـومي
منfrom بعيـدٍafar أوor قـريبِnearby
من بعيـدٍ أو قـريبِ
So share my worries with me,
So share with me my concerns,
So share these sorrows with me,
from far away or close by.
Whether from afar or near.
whether from afar or up close.
كلُّevery نُصْحٍcounsel، باتَhas become أَمـْراa command
كلُّ نُصْحٍ، باتَ أَمـْرا
منـكَfrom you رأياًan opinion، منfrom لَبيبِa wise person
منـكَ رأياً، من لَبيبِ
Every piece of counsel has become a command,
Every advice from you
Every piece of advice has become a command,
from you—a wise person's opinion.
Becomes for me a wise opinion from an intelligent one.
an opinion from you, from a wise mind.
داونيheal me، وارْحَمْand have pity on عـذابيmy torment
داوني، وارْحَمْ عـذابي
لاdo not تكنْbe ليto me كالغـريبِlike a stranger
لا تكنْ لي كالغـريبِ
Heal me, and have pity on my torment;
Heal me, have mercy on my torment,
Heal me, and have mercy upon my torment;
do not be like a stranger to me.
Do not be to me like a stranger.
do not be to me like a stranger.
أكتـويI am scorched ظلماًinjustice وزوراًand falsehood
أكتـوي ظلماً وزوراً
كـلevery يـومٍday فيin نحـيبِsobbing
كـل يـومٍ في نحـيبِ
I am scorched by injustice and falsehood,
I suffer injustice and falsehood
I am seared by injustice and falsehood,
every day, amid sobbing.
Every day in crying.
wailing in lamentation every single day.
ودَّعـونيthey bade me farewell إذwhen نسـونيthey forgot me
ودَّعـوني إذ نسـوني
بعضُsome of أهـليmy kin ياحبيـبيO my beloved
بعضُ أهـلي ياحبيـبي
They bade me farewell when they forgot me—
They bid me farewell when they forgot me
They bade me farewell when they forgot me,
some of my kin, O my beloved.
Some of my family, O beloved!
some of my own kindred, O my beloved.
عَلّمونيthey taught me كـيفhow أنسىI forget
عَلّموني كـيف أنسى
صاغـراًhumiliated، ودّيmy affection المـريبِunsettling
صاغـراً، ودّي المـريبِ
They taught me how to forget
They taught me how to forget
They taught me how to forget,
my unsettling love, in humiliation.
When young, my intimate companion.
in submission, my troubled affection.
غـيرnot بادٍapparent ماwhat أقـاسيI endure
غـير بادٍ ما أقـاسي
لَـوْعَةَthe anguish of الشَّـكِّdoubt الرَّهيبِdreadful
لَـوْعَةَ الشَّـكِّ الرَّهيبِ
What I endure does not show:
I endure stoically what I suffer
Unseen is the suffering I endure:
the anguish of dreadful doubt.
The agony of dreadful doubt.
the burning agony of terrible doubt.
لائميyou who blame me لاno،لاdo not تعـاتبْreproach
لائمي لا،لا تعـاتبْ
لوif بَـداbecame apparent هَـمُّthe sorrow of الكـئيبِthe downcast one!
لو بَـدا هَـمُّ الكـئيبِ!
You who blame me—no, do not reproach me,
Do not blame me, my critic,
O my blamer, no, do not reproach me
if the sorrow of the downcast were revealed!
If the grief of the sorrowful appears!
if the grief of the melancholic is revealed!
هلwhether لوعدٍfor a promise منكfrom you أرجوI hope
هل لوعدٍ منك أرجو
يحتـوينـيit enfolds me فيin القـريبِthe near future؟!
يحتـوينـي في القـريبِ؟!
Can I hope for a promise from you
Do I hope for a promise from you
May I hope for a promise from you
that will enfold me soon?!
That will soon contain me?
that will embrace me in the near future?!
