ياعظيمَO great one الشأنِmajesty ارْحَمْhave mercy
O You of exalted majesty, have mercy
O Lord of great stature, have mercy
O Great in Majesty, have mercy
on one seeking refuge, who feared reproach
On a seeker of refuge, fearful of blame
Upon a seeker of refuge who dreads reproach,
منfor ذنوبٍsins قدhave أحالتْturned
عيشـهhis life هَـمّاًworry وغَـمّاand sorrow
for sins that have turned
For sins which have turned
From sins that have transformed
his life into worry and sorrow.
His life into sorrow and gloom
His life into worry and gloom.
عنكfrom You لاnot تخفىare hidden خُطوبٌcalamities
خوفهhis fear قدhas زادincreased عِظْمـاin magnitude
No calamities are hidden from You;
You are not unaware of troubles
No afflictions are hidden from You,
his fear has grown in magnitude.
Whose fear has greatly increased
And his fear has grown immense.
طالماfor a long time فيin السِّرِّsecret يرجـوhe hopes
منكfrom You عـفواًpardon، ثمthen حِلْماforbearance
He has long hoped in secret
Long has he secretly hoped
For so long, in secret, he has hoped
for pardon from You, then forbearance.
For your forgiveness, then forbearance
For Your pardon, and then Your forbearance.
رغمdespite خوفيmy fear، إنَّindeed ذنبيmy sin
عندin the judgment of نفسيmy soul، ليسis not إثمـاan offense
Despite my fear, indeed my sin
Despite my fear, my sin
Yet despite my dread, my sin,
is no offense in my soul's judgment.
Is not a crime in my eyes
In the eyes of my soul, is no transgression.
مالنفسيwhat is wrong with my soul لاnot تبـاليit cares
رغـمdespite ماتخـفيهwhat it conceals رغـماagainst its will
What is wrong with my soul, that it does not care,
Though my soul cares not
What ails my soul that it pays no heed,
despite what it conceals against its will?
Despite its hidden defiance
Despite what it forcefully conceals?
كمhow many عـيوبٍfaults فيin عنادٍstubborn defiance
حَلَّلَتْـهاdeemed them lawful النفسُthe soul ظلـماwrongfully
How many faults, in stubborn defiance,
How many flaws in stubbornness
How many flaws, in sheer stubbornness,
has the soul wrongfully deemed lawful!
My soul unjustly allowed
Has the soul unjustly deemed permissible,
ثمthen قالتْit said وهْيَwhile it تشكوcomplains:
ثم قالتْ وهْيَ تشكو:
كلُّevery ذنبٍsin صـارbecame ذمّـاa reproach؟
Then it said, as it complained:
Then it complained:
Only to say, while complaining:
Has every sin become a reproach?
Has every sin become a blemish?
"Has every sin become a cause for condemnation?"
يالَنَفْسيalas for my soul كيفhow حاليmy condition
إنif دعـانيcalls me الرَّبُّthe Lord يومـاone day
Alas for my soul! How will I fare
Oh my soul, what is my state
Oh my soul, what will be my state
if the Lord calls me one day?
If the Lord one day calls me
If the Lord summons me one day?
O my God
إنَّindeed هَمّـيmy worry زادincreased كَـمّـاin quantity.
Pardon me, O my God;
Forgive me, my God
Forgive me, O my God,
indeed, my worry has grown in measure.
For my worries have increased.
For my sorrow has multiplied in measure.
