When my poetry's genius inspires me
When the poetry of my jinn inspires me.

Of my release, do not ask me.

From the heaven of passion I gaze;

Draw nearer my beloved to me
O my beloved, draw near to me.

Do not oppose the judgment of my feelings,

For in you I have placed my trust
For in you I have found my safety.

What has passed of the blossom of my life

Departed from me, without leave
Has slipped from me, without permission.

Do you see me, vain is my fancy?
Do you see me? Has my hope been dashed?

Woe to my soul, from a dear one

Who heeds not my tearful eye
Who pays no mind to the tears in my eyes.

And test me, have mercy on me
Me with gentleness, and test me.

Of madness that might strike me.

Of envious ones who spare me not
Of an envious one who will not let me be.

And erase from me the humiliation of injustice
from a fool who has not left me alone.
By a fool who left me not be
From a foolish one who has not left me alone.

Race, come, outrun me
Ascend, approach, and overtake me.

Every wine-jar, with the wine of art.

You were absent from me, and now here

Why did you not fling yourself into my arms?
You have come; will you not seek my embrace?

You are for me the key to my fortress.
