Rather, arrogance is your nature.

Rather, injustice is inherent in you

For arrogance is your very nature.

شـاردٌ ,عنّـي بعيدٌ

شـاردٌ ,عنّـي بعيدٌ

ساديٌّ، ما منك نـفعُ

ساديٌّ، ما منك نـفعُ

Wandering, far away from me.

Distracted, far away from me

Straying, far away from me,

Sadistic—no good comes from you.

Cruel, you are of no use

A sadist, yielding no benefit at all.

ما أنا بالمفتـري كذ

ما أنا بالمفتـري كذ

باً لـطيفاً فيـه لسْـعُ

باً لـطيفاً فيـه لسْـعُ

I am not one to fabricate

I am not a slanderer though

I am not one to fabricate a lie—

a gentle lie with a sting.

Alas, there is sting in this gentle one

A subtle falsehood that holds a sting.

إنـني نَهْـرٌ رفـيقٌ

إنـني نَهْـرٌ رفـيقٌ

دافـقٌ بالحـب نَـبْعُ

دافـقٌ بالحـب نَـبْعُ

Indeed, I am a gentle river,

I am a gentle stream

I am but a gentle river,

a spring gushing with love.

Flowing with love a spring

A spring overflowing with love,

مخلصٌ في الـود شَهْمٌ

مخلصٌ في الـود شَهْمٌ

بـائعي ما فـيه بـيعُ

بـائعي ما فـيه بـيعُ

Sincere in affection, noble-hearted.

Devoted in affection, generous

Loyal in affection, noble and true;

You who sell me—there is no sale in it.

My wares contain no sale

There is no selling the one who sells me out.

لا أقاضي من يعـادي

لا أقاضي من يعـادي

منك سمـعٌ منك منعُ

منك سمـعٌ منك منعُ

I do not sue those who show enmity.

I do not bargain with one who opposes

I do not prosecute those who show enmity,

From you comes listening; from you, refusal.

From you hearing, from you refusal

While from you comes listening, and from you comes withholding.

إنما حـدسي دليلي

إنما حـدسي دليلي

لم يكن في الأمـر صنعُ

لم يكن في الأمـر صنعُ

My intuition alone is my guide.

There was no contrivance in the matter.

There was no artifice in the matter

أستميلُ الدمع حيناً

أستميلُ الدمع حيناً

كـلما لي عَـزَّ دمـعُ

At times I coax the tears,

I entice tears at times

At times, I coax the tears to flow,

whenever tears grow scarce for me.

Whenever despair makes me weep

Whenever weeping becomes too hard for me.

إنْ ترَ الإحسان خيراً

إنْ ترَ الإحسان خيراً

خُـذْ بقلـبي فيه لفْعُ

خُـذْ بقلـبي فيه لفْعُ

If you see kindness as good,

If you see goodness in kindness

If you consider kindness a virtue,

take hold of my heart; it burns within.

Take my heart in it, a wound

Take my heart, though it burns within.

واسْتَتِرْ ما شئتَ لكن

واسْتَتِرْ ما شئتَ لكن

أنتَ مني أنتَ ضـلعُ

أنتَ مني أنتَ ضـلعُ

And hide yourself as much as you wish, but

Conceal what you wish, but

And hide away as much as you please, but

you are of me; you are a rib.

You are part of me, you are a rib

You are a part of me, you are my very rib.

مُكْرَهٌ مَـهْلا حبيـبي

مُكْرَهٌ مَـهْلا حبيـبي

مَغْرَمي طرْحٌ وجَـمْعُ

مَغْرَمي طرْحٌ وجَـمْعُ

Compelled—take it slowly, my beloved.

Reluctantly, gently my beloved

I am compelled—go gently, my beloved;

My passion is subtraction and addition.
