نـاكـرٌungrateful ذاكthat الحـبيبُthe beloved
عندهُwith him، مـاليI have no نصيبُshare
That beloved is ungrateful.
That beloved has forgotten me,
That beloved is ungrateful,
With him, I have no share.
I have no share with him.
With him, I have no share.
خـانَbetrayed ودِّيmy affection،رغـمdespite أنيthat I
فيin الهـوىlove إِلْفٌan intimate companion قريبُclose
He betrayed my affection, although I
He betrayed my affection, although
He betrayed my affection, even though I
am a close companion in love.
In love we were intimate friends.
Am a close companion in love.
طالgrew long ليليmy night، سـالflowed دمعيmy tears
شـاردٌdistracted، وحديon my own كئيبُsorrowful
My night grew long; my tears flowed.
My night grew long, my tears flowed,
My night grew long, my tears flowed,
Distracted, I am alone and sorrowful.
Distracted and sad was I.
Wandering, alone, and melancholic.
مَلَّgrew weary عـقليmy mind، لامrebuked قلبـيmy heart
قلتُI said: اهـدأْbe calm يارقـيبُO watcher
My mind grew weary; my heart reproached me.
My mind was confused, my heart blamed me,
My mind grew weary, it blamed my heart,
I said, "Be calm, O watcher."
I said: calm yourself, oh my soul.
I said: Calm down, O watchful censor.
لمdid not يَسَـلْask عمّاabout what أُعانـيI suffer
منfrom هـوانيmy humiliation مستـطيبُtaking pleasure
He did not ask about what I suffer;
He did not ask what I suffer
He did not ask about what I suffer,
he takes pleasure in my humiliation.
From my humiliation that gives him pleasure.
Finding pleasure in my humiliation.
لَوْif هموميmy sorrows قـدalready توالتْcame in succession
If my sorrows came one after another,
If my sorrows accumulated
If my sorrows have come in succession,
perhaps they would bring grief.
Perhaps sorrow would afflict him.
Perhaps they will strike him with sorrow.
أنقذونـيrescue me منfrom حريـقٍa fire
شَبَّflared up فيin قلبـيmy heart لـهيبُa flame
Rescue me from a fire:
Save me from a fire
Save me from a fire
a flame has flared in my heart.
That blazed in my heart like flames.
Whose flames have ignited in my heart.
هلis there? لـجرحيfor my wound منany دواءٍa remedy
لمdid not يُجَـرِّبْـهُtry it الطـبيبُthe physician؟
Is there any remedy for my wound
Is there a cure for my wound
Is there any medicine for my wound
that the physician has not tried?
That the doctor has not tried?
That the doctor has not yet tried?
لمdid not يكـنْbe للطـبِّfor medicine رأيٌan opinion
غيرother than مايـرجـوwhat he hopes for الحبيبُthe beloved
Medicine had no counsel
The doctor had no opinion
Medicine had no prescription
other than what the beloved hopes for.
Except what the beloved hoped for.
Other than what the beloved desires.
قُرْبُـهُhis nearness مـنّيto me عـلاجٌa cure
ناجـعٌeffective قـدmay يستجـيبُhe responds
His nearness to me is a cure,
His nearness to me is a remedy
His closeness to me is a cure,
effective—he may respond.
That may be efficacious.
An effective one that may heal.
بُعْـدُهُhis distance عنّـيfrom me جُنـونٌmadness
His distance from me is madness,
His distance from me is madness
His distance from me is madness,
rather, wailing or sobbing.
Rather, it is wailing and sobbing.
Rather, it is wailing and weeping.

مِلْتَyou turned away عنـيfrom me قـدmay أجيبُI respond
O partner in love, if
Oh partner of love, if
O partner in love, if
you turn away from me, I may respond.
You tire of me, I shall answer.
You turn away from me, I might still respond.
دعـوةٌa call للحبِّto love عَجْلىhasty
هـلْwill ...? يُلَبّـيhe answers أوor يغـيبُhe stays away؟
A hasty call to love—
A call to love urgently
A hurried invitation to love,
will he answer, or stay away?
Will he respond or be absent?
Will he answer, or remain absent?
غيرُnot مُسْتَعْصٍintractable شفـائيmy healing
عندمـاwhen يعـفوforgives الحبيـبُthe beloved.
My healing is not beyond reach
My healing is not difficult
My healing is not impossible
when the beloved forgives.
When the beloved pardons.
When the beloved forgives.
لمdid not أوافـقْencounter فيهin him صـدقاًtruthfulness
كـاذبٌa liar صنفٌa sort مُـريبُdubious
I found no truthfulness in him:
I did not find in him sincerity,
I found no honesty in him,
a liar, a dubious sort.
He is a liar, a dubious type.
A liar, of a suspicious kind.
ظالمٌunjust لاno خـيرَgood يُـرْجىis hoped for
مـنهfrom him مجنـونٌmad غـريبُstrange
Unjust, with no good to be hoped for
An oppressor from whom no good is hoped for,
An oppressor, with no good to be hoped
from him—mad and strange.
A crazy stranger.
From him - a strange madman.
عَلَّـهُperhaps he يـوماًone day يـعانـيsuffers
قَسْــوَةًcruelty إذْwhen يستجيبُhe responds
Perhaps one day he will suffer
Perhaps one day he will suffer
Perhaps one day he will suffer
cruelty when he responds.
Cruelty when he answers the call.
Cruelty when he yields to love.

إنَّindeed ظَـنّيmy expectation لاnot يَخـيبُfail.
He will weep over sins;
He will weep for his sins,
He will weep for his sins,
indeed, my expectation will not fail.
My expectation will not miss.
Indeed, my expectation will not fail.
