O messenger of beauty in every land,

guide us when we lose the way.

Teach us the meaning of beauty, for we

would have known nothing beautiful without you.

    فهبينا مما رزقت قليلا

    God fashioned you from tenderness and gentleness;

so give us a little of what you were granted.

O life of hearts, whoever has not been taught

life's lesson by you has lived in ignorance.

    Hearts remain like stone until

you fill them with gentleness and acceptance.

Where is a soul that, without you, would not be a wasteland?

What home, without you, would not be a thicket?

    فأميطي لثامك المسدولا

    In you lies the secret of beauty in all things;

so lift away your lowered veil.

    We loved roses only because

we had seen a likeness of your cheeks.

Nor did we prize blossoms except because

we saw you desire them as a wreath.

How much pleasure and bliss we have known,

whose nature, without you, would have been unknown.

People have found happiness through you in this world,

yet they have not granted you even a thread's worth of justice.

You, O delight of the eyes and pasture of the

heart, become a channel for tears.

You, O adornment of life and solace of

time, become a sign of suffering.

    س أغنى بها المدى ترتيلا

    You are the song of happiness and misery;

I sing it across the expanse in measured chant.

Had they acted rightly, they would have honored you despite bondage,

and bestowed kisses upon your right hand.

And their hearts would have drawn near to you in affection,

and their heads would have bowed in reverence.

You are nothing among us but a garden,

in which we hope for a gentle breeze.

I never encountered that face without

leaving it absorbed in its sorrow.

The eyes take no delight in gazing upon beauty

when it lies abased in captivity.

    أنت تبدين قيدك المجدولا

    You did not braid your tresses out of vanity;

    you display your braided shackle.

    أنت تعنين زندك المغلولا

    You did not wear your bracelet as an ornament;

you are pointing to your shackled wrist.

You complain of hardship and captivity, but

your tongue shrinks from making it plain.

Ah, how often people wrong the girl,

willfully forgetting the right accorded her.

They denied her freedom in life, so that

she cannot hope for any change in her life.

So she is robbed of her will and worn out,

not knowing any explanation for her plight.

They clothed her in what she dislikes, by compulsion,

and showed her one she does not want as a husband.

She accepts hardship and oppression submissively,

    and swallows torment and deception.

    I recognize civilization only

where you cast off your despised fetter.

    I recognize prosperity only

where you become a guide for souls.

So rise for reason, for it is no wonder

that you should safeguard reason and revive minds.
