أَخذتَ صديقاً طارفاً وأَضعتني
تَليداًlong-established وهَلand does...? يَزكوflourish الطَريفthe newly acquired one ويثمرُand bear fruit
تَليداً وهَل يَزكو الطَريف ويثمرُ
You took a newfound friend and forsook me,
You took a lively friend and abandoned me
a friend of long standing—and does the new one flourish and bear fruit?
To wither; does the lively ever produce fruit?
فمنthen who ذاthat one الَّذيwho بعديafter me يرّجيكhopes you will be نافعاًuseful
فمن ذا الَّذي بعدي يرّجيك نافعاً
وَلَمand has not يُبدshown يأَساًdespair منكof you فيin حيثwhere تصدرُyou go forth
وَلَم يُبد يأَساً منك في حيث تصدرُ
Who, then, after me, will hope you will be of use,
So who, after me, hopes for good from you?
and not show despair of you wherever you go forth?
Who does not despair of you wherever you lead?
