Know that friends are of three kinds,

and not everyone you have taken as a brother is a friend.

The purest of them in affection is the kindred spirit among them,

and the most steadfast in solitude and company.

That man, then, is trusted in his dealings,

and in every circumstance, a most cherished, dependable friend.

The falsest of them in affection is the companion of the cup; he is

a friend of constant morning and evening draughts.

And between the two is the one driven by need, seeking what

all of them pursue by every path.

So you approach that one and draw him close at one time,

and shun him at another, acting as a gentle companion.

You repay him in each circumstance with what was hoped for,

and beware of closeness to him when in straits.

And each of them, by his nature, is wary of what

causes harm, and hopes for benefit at every sunrise.
