أَخاكَ أَخاكَ إِنَّ من لا أَخاً لَه
كساعٍlike one hastening الىto الهيجاbattle بغيرwithout سلاحِa weapon
كساعٍ الى الهيجا بغير سلاحِ
Hold fast to your brother, your brother! For whoever has no brother
Your brother, your brother - he who has no brother
is like one hastening to battle without a weapon.
Is like one charging into battle unarmed.
وإِنand indeed ابنson عمpaternal uncle المرءthe man فاعلمso know جناحُهhis wing
وإِن ابن عم المرء فاعلم جناحُه
وَهَلand does …? ينهضُtake flight البازيthe goshawk بغيرwithout جناحa wing
وَهَل ينهضُ البازي بغير جناح
And indeed a man's paternal cousin—know this—is his wing.
And know that the cousin of a man - his wing
And can the goshawk take flight without a wing?
Can a falcon soar without wings outspread?
وَماand not طالبُa seeker الحاجاتneeds إِلّاexcept معذياًunclear as written; possibly 'tormented'
وَما طالبُ الحاجات إِلّا معذياً
وَماand not نالgained شيئاًanything طالبa seeker لنجاحfor success
وَما نال شيئاً طالب لنجاح
And the seeker of needs is only [perhaps tormented; the wording is unclear].
The seeker of needs suffers humiliation,
And no seeker of success has gained anything.
No seeker attains his goal without toil.
لحاmay … curse اللَهGod منwhoever باعsold الصديقthe friend بغيرهfor someone other than him
لحا اللَه من باع الصديق بغيره
وماand not كلevery بيعsale بعتهyou sold it برباحat a profit
وما كل بيع بعته برباح
May God curse whoever sold his friend for another;
God curse him who sells a friend for gain!
and not every sale you have made is profitable.
Not every sale concludes in profit.
كمفسدlike one who ruins أَدناهthe one nearest to him ومصلحand one who sets right غيرهsomeone other than him
كمفسد أَدناه ومصلح غيره
وَلَمand did not يأَتمرintend فيin ذاكthat غيرother than صلاحgood
وَلَم يأَتمر في ذاك غير صلاح
Like one who ruins the person nearest to him while setting another right,
He corrupts himself and improves another,
though in this he intended nothing but good.
In this he follows none but his own whim.
