Many a matter have I stripped of its bark,
and set its backbone straight, then held it in check.

I remain in war's abode so long as I am not humiliated there;
but if I fear humiliation from a land, I leave it.

I husband most of my wealth until you think me
a miser; yet if a rightful claim befalls me, I hold that wealth cheap.

I am not one to frequent houses out of poverty,
but when I have no need of them, I enter them.

and many a land have I crossed by night travel and resolve.

Ho, you who run past, now an auspicious omen, now an ill one,
risking a life I could take if I wished:

وَلَو وُضعت لي في إِناء أَكلتها
you challenge the pride of the boastful with a band of kinsmen,
yet were it placed before me in a bowl, I would eat it.

When men's hands fall short through incapacity,
I stretch my hand an armspan beyond them and win glory.

And many a noble practice was my father's care;
so my father taught it to me, and I practiced it.

And many an ugly word from a kinsman

hoping that tomorrow kinship might draw us together;
and many a wrong from him I have brushed off with my flank.

Whenever people's affairs grow threadbare and are neglected,
you find I have already cast all my affairs aside.
وإِنّيand indeed I سألقىshall meet اللَهGod لَمnot ارمI slandered حرّةa freeborn woman
وَلَمand not تتمنَّshe wished for يومَa day of سرِّsecret intimacy فخنتهاand so I betrayed her
And I shall meet God, never having slandered a freeborn woman—
betraying her though she never wished for a day of secret intimacy.
ولاnor قاذِفٌa slanderer of نَفسيmy soul وَنَفسيwhile my soul بريئةis innocent

Nor do I slander my soul while my soul is innocent;
and how could I excuse myself after having slandered it?
