Indeed, our father is Adam’s firstborn—know this—

And Eve’s: an aged sire with shaggy beards.

As though upon his snout were fluttering tufts

Of cotton, stirred up by carding hands.

And blackened rust is indeed sweeter to us

Than musk blended by the hands that mix it.

And our skins laugh in recognition of mail,

When a day comes, dark in hue and grim.

Our swords hang from men like pillars,

And between them and our ankles stretch vast wastes.

And a Rudayni spear’s joints seemed like

Sandgrouse racing to water in summer.

As though a crescent gleamed above its shaft,

Cleared of clouds and dust by cold gales.

It has a robe like an ostrich’s throat,

And its well-proportioned shaft is like a flight-feather.

And we are men whose heads fill helmets,

And we are loyal comrades when we close for battle.

Our skulls, leading us on the day of battle,

March toward death, never turning aside.
