أُضاحكI laugh with ضيفيmy guest قبلbefore إِنزالunloading رحلهhis baggage
أُضاحك ضيفي قبل إِنزال رحله
ويخصبُand he finds abundance عنديwith me والمحلُّwhile the land جديبُis barren
ويخصبُ عندي والمحلُّ جديبُ
I laugh with my guest before his baggage is unloaded.
I make my guest laugh before he departs
He finds abundance with me, though the land is barren.
Though my abode is barren and desolate
وَماand not الخصبabundance للأَضيافfor the guests أَنthat يكثرbe plentiful القِرىthe food offered to guests
وَما الخصب للأَضياف أَن يكثر القِرى
ولكنماbut rather وجهthe face الكَريمof the generous man خَصيبُis fertile
ولكنما وجه الكَريم خَصيبُ
Abundance for guests does not lie in plentiful fare;
It is not bounty that makes a dwelling thrive
rather, the generous man's face is fertile.
But rather the face of one noble and great
