Will bygone life in the protected pasture be restored to me by
I return seeking the past of a youthful life,
my passion for recalling love and my ardor,
My passion from remembering love and my ardour,

And I prepare my riding camels though none will guarantee me,
and call among the ruins to one who cannot hear.
And I call out from the ruins though none can hear,

Yes, what is of little worth satisfies the yearning lover,
Yes, longing contents the ardent though fruitless,
though before separation he was not easily contented.
Even if the intention was not content before the resolve,

We stood there, specters of longing and anguish,
We stood with spectres of passion and torment,
and embodiments of abasement and submission to love:
And shades of humiliation for love and devotion,

Towards steps made unsteady by the journey above,
wasted bodies amid wasted dwellings.
Towards bodies bent in the bowing of meadows,

By the life of decay, from Ḍārij's light it led away
Never did the light of dawn guide but to
only a compliant follower of calamities.
One who sells himself to misfortunes.

Indeed, people's ruins have been clothed and stripped bare;
The dwellings of a people were clad and stripped bare,
yet no dwelling was so inaccessible as Umm Manī‘.
Yet no home guarded like a vigilant mother,

Broad was the span of her beauty; she rivaled statues,
Rahiba sold beauty at the feast of wine,
surpassing them with a wondrous quality of loveliness.
Increasing through meaning in stunning grace,

She trod the earth with a slow one's step, sharing her movement
She trod the earth with slow steps, allotting
with glances of hers that moved swiftly through the heart.
For herself in the heart a swift gait,

As though a perfumer who told the fragrant herb, 'Open up,'
As if a perfume-seller said to the caravan halt!
were saying to her, 'Trail your skirts and waft your scent.'
Saying lower your trailing hems and pause,

and she dyed them with fresh blood from her cheek.
Dyeing them from her cheek in the morning dew,

The protected pasture's days were my days, and its gazelles' favor
The fever's time is my time, and the doe of its thickets
was with me; life's spring there was my spring.
Is with me, and the spring of life within it my spring,

Nights when I covered every neck and wrist—
Nights overwhelm every beauty and refuge,
each that slept alone—with a bedfellow from my mouth.
Each in solitude from my mouth in a companion,

If I tend to another in a moment of separation,
I made amends with an intercessor from my locks.
I make amends from my union through an intercessor,

by a spark of lightning flashing like teeth,
With a lightning spark as guides for the confused,

For a need by the sands' edge was the sun roused,
the sun, until it could find no way to rise.
Until it rose no longer in obscurity,

The ugly reproach my white hair if they see
dawn's light emerging beneath a stretch of night.
The dawn's light beneath my decrepit form,

Yet I have not grown old, though in weeping for you
my sideburns' blackness was lost in my tears' whiteness.
The blackness of my youth's prime turned white in my tears,

'Ask your ever-visiting phantom how I sleep.'
Greetings to your phantom, how desolate my bed!

I cast off passion, save fidelity, and was not one
I discarded passion saving discretion,
to be beguiled in it away from a libertine's station.
And would not be misled therein from an ignoble stand,

I was gentle in leisure but the tether
the rein of my longing into the right hand of my renunciation.
Of my struggle turned in the hand of my will,

For them between intentions it has and forgetfulness,

And secrets are not safe with a gossip,
