She placed upon my heart a surety from the pledge,
She built a guarantor of the covenant upon my heart
who reminds me of nearness in the reign of distance.
Reminding me of nearness in the state of distance

وفائي لها أحظَى ولو غدرتْ عندي
So tell her slanderer, you two, even if he speaks truth:
So say to her keeper, even if he is sincere
my loyalty to her is dearer to me, even if she proves faithless.
My loyalty to her is more fortunate even if she betrays me

هل اجتدتِ البُخَّالَ أم حَمَلتْ وجدي
My two friends, why has the wind blown sickly?
My friend, what ails the wind that blew sick
Has it begged of misers, or borne my anguish?
Did it catch cold or carry my passion?

I have taken on, of those two ills, what cannot be borne
I gathered from the two illnesses what rugged cliffs
by the towering hills of solid rock, for all their breadth.
Cannot diminish when the sun descends

Longing—but who will reunite my scattered company?
Yearning, but who can unite me?
And an outstretched hand—but who is the man who gives?
And a helping hand, but who is the glorious man?

So no love—rather, no share of fortune has reached you;
So no love, but fortune reached you in your share
loved ones and fortune have joined in turning away.
Lovers and fortune participated in prevention

And my time called my long patience fortitude.
And my time named my patience composure
May I be rid of you! What have you left for the steadfast after me?
You ceased to exist after me, so spare yourself

Just as those before me blamed you, I blame you knowing
that you are destined for revilement after me.
That you are prone to blame after me

But, for my sake, let your reversals pass over a noble man,
Yet transcend for me by your flowing to it
to whom I appeal for redress when your vicissitudes wrong me.
If your circumstances flow to it, I am prepared

When I call upon al-Sahib for help and find him,
If I seek help from a friend and find him
then frighten me with the loss of anyone else you wish.
Disappoint me, so I seek other than him as I desire

And if life among friends has passed without him,
And if life passes among friends without him
God's knowledge of that, and praise, suffice me.
My sufficiency is in God's knowledge in that, and praise

And I don't know the praised one who didn't reward me
when I speak well; indeed, it is the other way round.
When I say good, indeed that is the opposite

Most deserving, in my eyes, of the praise I rise to
The most deserving among them in my eyes for what I compose in verse
recount is he whose kindness surpasses my counting.
Is he whose benevolence has passed counting me

And tarnish the clear water from my stream

I say to my hopes, fearing their despair
riding patience's back brings you nearer to wisdom.
Riding the back of patience is nearest to propriety

They are put to flight; but for the face of your good fortune,
You would wander, and if not for your fortunate face
your lamp in darkness would not be the star of Banu Sa'd.
Your lamp in the darkness would not be a star of Bani Saad

Abu Al-Qasim grant me a hearing
And set a limit to my wait for tardy fortune.
And stop for me the delay of my fortune at its limit

I was generous with my poetry before praising you
with my smooth-flowing words each giver whose bounty curled tight.
Finding with the youth of my speech every curly-haired attainer

When I say "Where is generosity?" its stinginess recites
'Time erased a dwelling of Hind's at al-Mushaqqar.'
Time erased a quarter with erasure from India

In his eyes the sun is faulted for its light, as a pretext
The sun blames it for light, arguing
for his withholding, and water in summer's heat for its coolness.
Against its prevention, and the water in heat for cold

Your seas overflowed while it dried them up
would that I knew why your generosity is not contagious!
If only my poetry knew the extent of your generosity

I once had, through poetry, a season of favor with you,
And I had in poetry with you a state
but its stay was brief—the reign of roses.
But its stay was brief, the state of roses

I remain while no lover of yours is fulfilled except me
except me—suffering abandonment, alone among them.
I alone suffer estrangement among them, lonely

Why then are you satisfied with me and glory for a stance
with tears of despair crowding onto my cheek?
Where the tears of despair crowd upon my cheek?

The debt owed me is repaid with nothing but raised hopes;
And I do not cease to demand my due from it
so how often I demand its payment, chiseling away my skin!
How much I demand while I carve from my skin!

May fulfillment bring me to an endpoint
Perhaps fulfillment will stand with me at a point
that grants rest: for a year I have been dragged along on a promise.
That relieves me, so I have a solution to draw out the promise

Deferrals that procrastination has brought to its furthest limits—
Fulfillments whose deadlines lengthy delays meet
so hasten their fulfillment—or the face of refusal.
So expedite the fulfillment or the refusal!
