فيamong الناسthe people بينbetween مراسلٍa sender ومراسلِand a recipient
O you who walk with reproach, bearing its bitterness,
O you who walk with reproach, bearing bitterness
among people, between sender and recipient,
Among people, between correspondent and correspondent
أبلغconvey لديكthere with you أباAbu (father of) عليٍّAli لومةًa reproach
كالنصحlike counsel تُخبرُit informs جائراًa wrongdoer عنon behalf of عادلِa just man
convey to Abu Ali there with you a reproach,
Convey to your father Ali my blame
like counsel, informing a wrongdoer on a just man's behalf.
Like advice, telling a transgressor about a just one
لاdo not تنكَرنْreject منّيfrom me العتابَthe reproach فلمfor you have not تزلْceased
قِدْماًfrom of old مثَقِّفَthe straightener of كلِّevery خِلٍّclose friend مائِلwayward
Do not reject my reproach, for you have always been
Do not deny me reproach, for you have not ceased
the longtime straightener of every wayward friend.
To accustom every leaning friend to education
أَتنامُdo you sleep? عنheedless of قولٍan utterance أرِقتُI lay awake لوقعهِat its impact
ألَماًin pain وسهداًand sleeplessness وهوand it is حزُّa cutting through مَفاصليmy joints
Do you sleep heedless of an utterance whose impact kept me awake,
Shall I sleep from words that kept me awake
in pain and sleeplessness, while it cuts through my joints?
In pain, insomnia, and it is the grief of my joints
وإذاand if قُذفتُI am slandered فقدthen indeed قُتلتُI am slain فكيفso how ليfor me
بالصفحwith pardon عنكfor you وقدand already غَفرتَyou have pardoned لقاتليfor my killer
And if I am slandered, I am slain; how, then, can I
And if I am cast then I am killed so how can I
pardon you, when you have pardoned my killer?
Forgive you when you have forgiven my killer
تنبوyou glance off وأنتَand you غِرارُthe cutting edge سيفيmy sword فيin يديmy hand
ويقصِّرand he falls short ابنُكَyour son وهوand he لَهذمُthe keen point ذابليmy slender lance
You glance off, though you are my sword's edge in my hand,
You caution while you are the scabbard of my sword in my hand
and your son falls short, though he is the keen point of my slender lance.
And your son falls short while he demolishes my withering
وأراكماand I see you both لاnot الحقّthe truth أنتَyou مدافعٌa defender
عنهon its behalf ولاnor هوhe دافعٌa repeller للباطلِof falsehood
And I see you both: you do not defend the truth,
And I see you both, not the truth are you defending
nor does he repel falsehood.
Him nor is he defending falsehood
أفتعرفانso do you two know? لموسرٍfor one with ample means منin نُصرةٍgiving aid
عذراًan excuse إذاif أمسىhe ends up بصورةِin the guise of خاذلِone who withholds aid
So can you two find, for one with ample means to help,
Do you both know any excuse for a wealthy one
an excuse, if he ends up in the guise of one who withholds aid?
When he spends the night in the form of a coward
وعلامand why أرجوI hope for صاحباًa companion لعظائمfor grave matters
يوماًone day إذاif لمnot يُنتدَبhe is called upon لقلائلِfor trifles
And why should I count on a companion for grave matters
And for what should I hope for a friend of great deeds
one day, if he is not called upon for trifles?
If he is not called to small deeds
ومنand among المحالthe impossible ولمand you have not تذدwarded off عنيfrom me يَدَيْthe two paws of
ضَبُعٍa hyena نهوضُكyour rising للهزبرagainst the lion الباسلِthe valiant
And it is impossible—when you have not warded from me the paws
And it is impossible when you do not ward off from me
of a hyena—for you to rise against the valiant lion.
The onslaught of the hyenas, your standing for the brave lion
وأرىand I see فؤاديmy heart بعدُstill غيرَnot مسالمٍmaking peace
إمّاif جفوتكماI shun you both وغيرَand not مساهلِlenient
And I find my heart still unwilling to make peace,
And I see that my heart after is not peaceful
if I shun you both, and unwilling to relent.
Either your aloofness or unconciliatory
ولقدand indeed عزمتُI resolved تصبُّراًpatient endurance أسلاكماI forget you both
معهwith it فأثقلso it weighed down حملُthe burden of صبريmy patience كاهليmy shoulders
Indeed, I resolved on patient endurance, to forget you both
And I was determined to be patient with you both
through it; but the burden of my patience weighed down my shoulders.
But the burden of my patience weighed down my shoulders
فرجعتُso I turned back ماnot أخذreceived انتصاريmy revenge حظَّهits due
منيfrom me ولاnor أخذgained الجفاءُestrangement بطائلِanything worthwhile
So I turned back: my revenge had not received its due
So I turned back, what my vengeance took as its share
from me, nor had estrangement achieved anything worthwhile.
From me nor did estrangement take any use
