O neighbors of ours in al-Ghawr, while the caravan heads toward Tihamah,
Our companions left us at dawn while the caravan was being blamed
does one free of love know how love's captive spent the night?
Does an estranged uncle know how the orphaned spent the night?

You departed, and the night's length for us and for you
You left while the night was still young for you and us
was equal, yet among you were wakeful ones and sleepers.
It's the same, while some of you stayed up and some fell asleep

Our lives would ransom you, departing travelers, who left behind
You left us, among the complainers, and left behind
hearts that refused to know patience without you.
Hearts that refused to know patience without you

They shield their faces from the sun, though the sun is among them,
They veil their faces from the sun, while the sun is in them
and seek guidance from the star, though the star is one of them.
And seek guidance from the stars, while the stars are from them

I implore Na'man for tidings of them;
I ask Nu'man the wise about them
one asked to speak, though mute, is knowledge enough.
His knowledge is sufficient though he is a foreigner

I keep my composure out of apprehension, but parting has a groan
And I dream with sympathy while separation is sorrowful
that exposes the rash man feigning restraint.
Through which the reckless passionate one appears

When farewell stripped away what I had known,
When it was time to bid farewell to what I was accustomed to
and nothing remained but a glance to be seized,
And nothing remained but a gaze to be treasured

I wept over the valley and made its water forbidden:
I cried over the valley and forbid its water
how can water be lawful when most of it is blood?
How can the water be permitted when most of it is blood?

With my sighs I drove their howdahs away from me,
I turned my breath away from their perfumes
as though their mounts were being branded by those sighs.
As if their riding camels were marked with musk

O reproacher, if forgetting is indeed a betrayal,
I would blame if betrayal was the cause of estrangement
then your truest statement is that I am love-stricken.
And I sincerely confess that I am passionately in love

I wished love were two days: union and estrangement,
I wished for the passion of union and separation for two days
through which today's sufferer enjoyed bliss yesterday;
Through it today suffers whom yesterday delighted

By their justice in judgment for their generosity

They distinguish their friends from their enemies

When they retaliate on the day of reward and favor

But they made an unjust path for other religions
apportioned a path among people with injustice's arrow.
A course they took through tyranny among the people

So the fresh water was only in the envious murky
and no fire blazes except within the lover.
And the bright fire only in the lovers' kindling

He seems to trot fast but he is actually slow

Hopefully safe from its dangers coming to me

Your pride's embers have settled in Dhibyan

Where they belonged and their kingdom resided

How long—when kindness was your nature—
Why was decency an inborn trait binding us?
must our bond go unnoticed, and how often must we complain?
While it secretly dwindled and we are so wronged

What of a branch among you whose root was sound?
A branch among you with good roots flourished
You raised estrangement as its branch among the branches you raised.
But you hurried to estrange it while it branched out

سمعتمyou heard بهof him غيرَother than الذيwhat قدindeed نظرتمُyou saw
Was I burdensome, or was I al-Ma'idi in your eyes—
Did I weigh heavily or was I slandered among you?
someone you heard of differently from what you saw?
You heard other than what you have seen
فلاso ... not شكرواmay they give thanks فضلَthe gift of العتابreproach فإنهfor indeed it
فُضالاتُthe overflow of داءsickness الصدرin the breast والداءُand the sickness يُكظَمُis restrained
Let them not give thanks for the gift of reproach, for it is
Then don't thank the grace of reproach, for it
the overflow of sickness in the breast, a sickness held in check.
Is excess of chest pain and the illness concealed
وماand ... not فاضَoverflowed حتىuntil ضاقgrew too narrow عنهfor it إناؤهits vessel
وقدand may يملأfill القَطرُraindrops الإناءَthe vessel فيُفعَمُso it fills to the brim
It did not overflow until its vessel grew too narrow,
What overflowed until its container narrowed?
and raindrops may fill a vessel until it brims over.
A drop may fill a vessel so it brims
صبَرتI endured لكمfor you حولينtwo years تِلوَيْنsuccessive راجياhoping
أخيبُI am disappointed ووقعُand the impact of الجرحa wound فيupon الجرحa wound مؤلمُis painful
I endured for you two successive years, hoping,
I endured two revolving years hoping
only to be disappointed; a wound upon a wound is painful.
To be let down as wound piled on wound hurts
وأشهدand I declare إنif لمnot تغننيenrich me العامَthis year هذهthis
فلاthen no ريعyield ممنوعٌis withheld ولاnor جادhas given generously منعِمُa benefactor
And I declare: if this poem does not enrich me this year,
I testify if this year does not suffice me
then no yield is withheld and no benefactor has been generous.
Then there's neither withheld crops nor generous rain

علاءَglory (continued) الثناءُpraise فانظرواthen look كيفhow أنتمُyou are
If you wish to see how praise builds
If you wish to see how glory builds me
lofty glory, then look at what you are.
Then look how you are without me
