O my two companions, turn aside with me awhile
O my friend, stop by the hills for a while
to the ruins, and ask their hills:
And ask those who dwell there,

Who has inhabited them after us one day, and who

Their fortunes have changed after us,

And who has sipped the wine from its pureness
and sipped the cool sweetness from her dusky lips;
And tasted the ripe fruits from its wetness,

And who has pastured the meadows in the folds of protection
and hunted down the fleeing one among its gazelles?
And hunted the wild beasts from its lairs,

O tree of the valley, may a raincloud water you,

so you laugh before the great trees do, because it weeps.

And O narcissi of the hillocks that have flourished
on the boughs from your quarter—who has plucked them?

And O little beds of the heart that were twisted
of Naʿmān, then al-Athīl amid its sandy flats:
With the passion of Nu'man, so the narcissi have sipped from its wine,

indeed, today I am lovesick and enamored of you all,
Today I am pouring passion, utterly lovesick
possessed of burning longing whose anguish never ends.
With a burning that will not diminish its heat,

Never has my soul recalled the days of the protected pasture
My soul has not recalled the days of intimacy
without my eye forsaking its slumber;

without the sweetness of its fragrance healing me.
Except the perfume has healed me from its redolence.
