O abodes of the tribe beside the protected pasture,
O dwellings of the beloved, you were once reality to me, now merely an illusion,
you have become a supposition after being a reality.
Time has taken the freshness of your songs and left you with only dryness.

Time took a fresh, splendid garment
Though you've become hostile to the eye since they left, you're still a friend to my heart,
from your haunts, and gave you its worn-out rags.
When the burden of pining grew too heavy, I left hoping your solidity would relent.

So, though you have become an enemy to the eye
I did not know until she enticed me that she was like me, desirous of union.
since their departure, you are indeed a friend to the heart.
Where are my neighbors whose longing I share? An incessant longing that left me sleepless.

I thought, when I could not bear separation's burden,
Wild deer roam the dwellings, their magic making them seem like gliding gazelles.
that those mute ruins could bear it.
My friends gathered one evening, their lights flickering like fireflies.

I did not know, until they wasted away
They conferred then said, let's pause, perhaps he'll emerge distraught and disheveled.
as I wasted, that they too were longing like me.
I said, if you must, then wait, let him pass by unhindered on his way.

Where are my neighbors there? How I yearn for them—
My overflowing tears will rain down, and should that weather come,
a longing whose intoxication never sobers.
My eager heart races to meet it, yearning to be soaked.

A crescent moon appears a stranger, yet it is the master of the sun's rising.
whom sorcery deemed accursed and tethered.
I thought wine forbidden to the devout until I tasted its exquisite intoxication.

My companions sighted over Kazima
Oh you who forbid all pleasures, how can the deprived forget what is rightfully his?
a cloudbank bearing a thick-fringed, pouring cloud.
When you saw my distraction, heartsick with pining, you called it moral corruption.

They disputed, then said, 'Let us halt;
Have you no pity for my anguished soul on the verge of death?
perhaps it will drop its burdens on the hillside.'
Be gentle, perhaps one smitten has never known such cruelty.

Divide my heart between you, take your share and leave me mine.
and let my worn-out mount go on its way.'
Fate did not give me but a sip of this delicate mortal existence,

The streams of my tears have not failed me,
Where my days were all kings, and time itself, the sovereign.

The maid of life, fair of form, cheeks flushed, hair black as onyx.

And in that open country, if I reach it,
The gaze of the sickly eye that abandons me today once promised eternal devotion.
my heart has gone ahead; I seek to catch it.
In the thick shade of youth's vines, branches laden with fruitful dreams.

An era indulged me, so I took liberties, unable to restrain its galloping passage.

Now that worldly pleasures have departed, my honor and dignity will sustain me.

My hands will not accept humiliation, nor will my steps be guided by the staff of injustice.

O you who withhold a debt despite having means,
I am that unyielding lion, weakness of will cannot thwart me on the day of reckoning.
how can the impoverished forget his dues?
My clenched fists have a time-honored bond with the line of Ayyub.

Was it for what you saw of my lovesick bewilderment,
A man worthy of the name wields his fists in battle, guided by his arrows.
as separation assailed me, that you called me fearful?
A brother of the night rouses when chaos calls, responding to the beat of drums.

He brings clarity to the confused, rising above the slurred speech of drunkenness.

Be gentle! Ah, many a man has tasted love,
If a friend unintentionally wrongs you, let sincerity outweigh the offense.

Inhale his gentle nature, partake of the honeyed essence, leave the bitter sediment.

There emerges from their depths a hollow reed, empty yet eternally resonating.
