خصيمايَ من ظمياءَ واشٍ وشامتُ
وحظَّايand my two portions مظنونٌuncertain لديهاwith her وفائتُand lost
وحظَّاي مظنونٌ لديها وفائتُ
My two adversaries over Zamya are a slanderer and a gloater.
My adversary is arrogant and gloating over my misfortune
And my two portions: one uncertain with her, one lost.
While my fate is suspicious to her and I'm defeated
وقلبيand my heart لهاfor her وحشيَّةٌa wild doe ضلَّstrayed خشفُهاher fawn

تُطاولُ تَبغيهِ الرُّبا وتُلافتُ
And my heart for her is a wild doe whose fawn has strayed.
And my heart is savage towards her, its cover is ripped
She stretches over the hills seeking him, turning this way and that.
She extends her hand greedily while showing humility

ويومٌ تداجيه الشخوصُ الثوابتُ
Night after night has passed as she tracks him,
One night has passed after another
And a day when motionless shapes deceive him.
And a day rolls by the firm mountains

She earnestly asks the star about him: where is his path?
It asks the stars about its path
At times she veers from it, at times she follows its bearing.
It wanders from time to time, rising and setting

Yet he is not near her, where a stray might be gathered in,
Neither is it where a wanderer can be gathered
Nor can his return be hoped for, even if a runaway returns.
Nor is its return to be hoped for if it strays

Except that it passed by the water of Suwayqah
Near dawn, where an archer had spent the night at the watering place.
Wandering and craving the path, disappointed

In his hand, for his livelihood, a sharp, timeworn shaft,
In his hand, provision is more stingy, more guarded
And a curved bow whose mouth sounds out when drawn.
And when sharing is needed, the palms are tight

He feeds the starved with her generosity
Whether provisions favor him or keep away.
Whether she was kind to him or avoided him

Nothing alarmed her but blood and a little fire,
Yet, she dislikes nothing but blood and decay
And picked-out pieces of crumbled bones.
And choice bones that are soft and brittle

So she returned, walking with despair where his shadow should have been;
So she returns, pacing near its shadow
And doom has appointed times, even if caution could avail.
And if caution would make one rich in the present, traps would be set

فقلت حديثٌ مضحِكٌ وهو كابتُ
The travelers told me she had taken another in my place.
The messengers informed me that she has changed
I said: a laughable tale, yet disheartening.
So I said, "An amusing tale, but it is false"

Has the one she took instead filled my place in love?
She has replaced me in love with one unlike me
By her father, a wide gulf lies between us.
In generosity, while between us is a huge difference

Is that a phantom from her, while the south winds beat,
Is it an illusion of her or are my sides welcoming
Beside Khabt, while eyelids lie still?
Next to disappointment while my eyelids are dismayed

It crossed the night like a star, finding its steps heavy,
The night folds its stars and finds the crossing burdensome
With that soft-hipped woman, then struggling onward.
With the slow swaying of hips, then it rests

We spent the night with it amid fragrance and radiance,
Thus we remain in the faint light and illumination
The ban-trees of al-Liwa ashamed, the full moon astounded.
While the crescent wanes and the full moon pales

We see the musk rat under our feet
Were fragrant fragments and crumbs from its sleeves.
So parts of its fur stick out and some fall off

Ask the tents at al-Bayda, beside al-Hima:
Ask the white tents on the side of the preserve
Can my scattered desires be gathered together within you?
Will my scattered group join at the winter camp?

And does the prey, whom fate has hounded, have a refuge
So that your runaway nights might be tethered for me?
Where I can gather your nights, O lost ones?

For life is alive and time is a blooming youth
Still young, and the basil of carefree leisure growing.
And the leisure's basil is thriving

My head has turned gray, dyed twice, so I'm weakened
Another vigorous, or following close, feigning death.
Yet still with some youthfulness, changing

And fate is but an illness of endless sorrow
Throughout life, or a calamity rushing in without warning.
Or bold adventures that come suddenly

Their hearts who loves me and who hates me.
Who of them is loyal to me and who hates me

Silently, to what displeased me, so I make peace
In it, another dissembling—if only he would face me openly!
Or argue - how can I if we reconcile?

I have made indifference a protection from them
And some, human in body, have hearts of demons.
And among people are bodies with barren hearts

My withdrawal from them and solitude has taught me
With myself—that I had erred in seeking many companions.
That in crowds, I was lost

By springs whose water has failed, and pasturelands.

Can a star lure you, or an expert guide lead you?
Does a star allure you or a ruin guide you?

The lean beasts will yield milk, or the dying live.
While hornets or snakes live there
