رعىmay He guard اللّهGod يومon the day of البينparting ظبياًa gazelle أذمَّgave a pledge of protection ليto me
بماthrough what أثرَّleft traces التوديعُfarewell فيupon وجَناتِهِhis cheeks
May God guard the gazelle who, on the day of parting, gave me his pledge,
On the day of parting, a gazelle grazed
Through the traces farewell left upon his cheeks.
whose cheeks were reddened by the pain of separation.
تعاطيتُI tried إلاexcept النومَsleep بعدafter فِراقِهِparting from him
كأنِّيas though I عليهover him مُسقَمٌmade ill بحياتِهِby his life
I tried everything but sleep after parting from him,
After he left, I sought only sleep
As though I were made ill over him by his life.
as if I were sick with yearning for his life.
وصرتُand I came to أذمُّblame الدهرَTime فيin الليلthe night مادجَاas long as it was dark
وعهيand my recollection (assuming وعهدي was intended) بهof it والليلُand the night منamong حسناتهِits blessings
And I came to blame Time at night, as long as it was dark,
I began to blame fate in the night, ceaselessly weeping,
Yet I remember Time when night was among its blessings.
dazed by him, as the night flaunted his beauties.
