I wish—and wishes are the poor man's utmost effort.
I wish and hope tires the despondent,
And I spend my days on 'if only' and 'whether.'
And I spend my days saying "if only" and "perhaps".

And I heal the burdens of life when
they darken before me, with hope's sweet charms.
Its darkness is illuminated by the lights of hope.

A solace—yet it is the love I complain of;
It is solace, though it is the love complained of,
and consolations for grief that are themselves the maladies.
And the consolations of a sad soul cure illnesses.

And a love I think little of what is called misery
for a wrongdoer proud of his wrongs.
With one who wrongs me and persists in wrongdoing.

Do not think it strange that I frequent
asking riders about one who never asks.
The crowds asking about one who did not ask.

I imagine the gazelle appeared a deluge
and the sluggish, wasted mount on the plain for the ruined dwelling.
And the fledglings dew in the hollows of the ruins.

O daughter of Sa’di what injustice you have wreaked
and fidelity turned to treachery and stinginess!
Loyalty has returned to betrayal and stinginess.

or alone adopted a borrowed creed?
Or adopted a fabricated faith?

For every slain warrior I have a saying:
who pays no blood-price for me, and a kinsman who pays none.
He did not support me and the protector was unwise.

and guarding bees stand before the honey.
And the protectors of bees without honey.

So whose spilled blood is required of me?
its vengeance shared among the encampments.
Vengeance for it divided among the tribes.

Did you graze after a pact that did not hold?

A lord who betrays, though among you his name is 'covenant'!
By the Lord of Āl whose name is exalted among you?

That wounded the heart even if the killing ceased.

Travelers at Minā, if not for chance meetings,
lips would have veiled them with kisses.
Their lips would have been covered in kisses.

Even if I appointed myself judge and acted justly.

My breath was foul when she drew near.

what has passed was; what comes is 'perhaps.'
Though the paths were narrow.

They were equitable in affection so in them is half
and gave me drink when the hollows held mere trickles.
And when they give freely they increase in excellence.

A nail they hammered in was made smooth where it pierced.

He fills the breast by tongue and hand,
Their champion stretched out his hand until
and reaches sound judgment, slowly or swiftly.
He grasped it, a pen that harvested though the spear stalled.

ورأىand deemed العجزَweakness فراغاًidleness فاشتغلْso worked
He stayed chaste when his age would have excused him,
Proper conduct cultivated your natures so
and saw idleness as weakness, so set to work.
Each of you followed the generosity of his father and obeyed.

فإذاbut when استقرَبَهُsummons him near الحقّjustice نزلْhe descends
His endeavors carry him to the stars;
It only diminished your wealth
yet when justice calls him near, he comes down.
The excess of what you give while the giver owns little.

يقمَحُhe refuses to drink الشربةَthe draught والماءُthough the water عَلَلْis a second serving
Averse to care, as you know from his company,
Your oaths have become accustomed to truthfulness
he refuses the draught though water is offered again.
And when sorrow intensified, it was eased.

Whenever he is matched against his peers,
They guaranteed me against fate and so helped me
they limp, though not gaunt, while he strides free.
For when one you guarantee harms you, he will not be disgraced.

They envied his father for him; he fails who
One hosted by you is counted among your glories
envies the sun its full moon, and loses his way.
In all that is good and beautiful.

He returns the water so the first to drink
a grove that feeds you glory and gives shade.

They are, though their envier denies them,
You are a pasture in which I am the guide
a nose-ring known to the camel's nose.
To fresh growth, familiar with the terrain.

Its forest is impregnable; closed are
You have pleased me with love so follow my lead
the paths of cunning and stratagems toward it.
As the neck has always been too majestic for the yoke.

مَرسٌa rope أَسحلَit unravels منfrom حيثwhere فُتِلْit was twisted
Whenever, by calculation, there is twisted against it
Poetry reminds me that I am your adviser
a rope, it unravels where it was wound.
In praise, so it sorted and picked out the best.

The snake-charmers stayed awake over its incantations,
I was allotted some favor in poetry for you
but it is deaf, defying them with crooked fangs.
For poetry has its portions and ups and downs.

The sharp sword is powerless to convey to it
Whenever I weakened in composing it
what letters and envoys say about it.
They wondered “Is he thinking or drunk?”

Their knight extended, until he reached it,
You vexed me with it and so I took joy in it,
a pen that spans the distance while the spear is paralyzed.
Just as the half-asleep eye delights when the rooster crows.

Virtue trained your palates, and so
Every abode other than yours is to me
each of you followed his father's generosity and example.
A stretch of land or one traveling the course of a parable.

Nothing has diminished your wealth but
Your generosity stirred me to begin
the excess of what you give; the giver is left poor.
One who herds glory does not graze unasked.

Your right hands have grown familiar with want,
For you is my love - its parts honored,
and when hardship makes you master, it grows easy.
Saved from the barren hand, the product of sickness.

Time oppressed me, so I became your neighbor;
Be gone from one who is not stingy with blessings -
thus your neighbor is one who cannot be abased,
It is a debt, and if asked for, it floods forth.

one of you in all that is good and lawful.

never made to suffer the blows dealt to strange camels.

You tamed me with love; then lead a neck
that long defied the bending force of the tether.

Poetry was inspired to know I am sincere
in praising you, so it refined and sifted its words.

A distinction in my verse has been allotted
to you; poetry has its fortunes and turns.

It stirred my longing for you, and I exulted in it,
with a courser's frisking: when it yearns, it neighs.

Your unsolicited generosity to me stirred it;
none has cherished glory like a giver never asked.

which costs him dearly—and, when asked, he coughs.
