أَستنجِدُ الصبرَ فيكم وهو مغلوبُ

وأسألُ النومَ عنكم وهو مسلوبُ
I seek patience's aid concerning you, though it is defeated.
I seek patience's aid, though it's defeated in you,
And I ask sleep about you, though it has been stolen.
And ask sleep about you, though it's deprived.

وأبتغي عندكم قلباً سمحتُ به

وكيف يرجِعُ شيءٌ وهو موهوبُ
And I seek, in your keeping, a heart I freely gave,
And with you I seek a generous heart,
but how can anything return once given away?
How can something return when it's gifted?

I did not know the worth of union with you
I didn't know your worth until you left,
until you deserted me; some desertion teaches.
Parting disciplines, though some separation hurts.

I entrust to God a moon within your dwellings,
In your verses, I entrust God with a moon,
whom my eye sees with longing, and who is beloved.
My eyes see it in longing, and it's loved.

I am pleased and angry—or accept his changing moods;
I accept and get angry at its fickleness,
and everything the beloved does is beloved.
All a beloved does is loved.

As for his slanderer, he is turned away without success;
As for the slanderer, he returns fruitless,
and can he be heeded, when surrender of the soul is sought?
Does a requester get answered when sacrifice is required?

Had he been fair, he would not have said, "Wait for a reunion
If he were fair, he'd say: "Wait for a connection
that will come tomorrow"; waiting for something is torment.
Tomorrow," but awaiting something is torment.

And love would have held kindness and tenderness
In love there's bliss and a turning point,
from him, just as it holds harshness and reproach.
As in it there's rebuke and scolding.

O ladies who hate gray hair as it
akin to their cheeks in color!
Matches their cheeks with its hue.

You refuse whiteness and refuse I blacken it,
with dye; to her, both colors are raven-black.
Both colors are unsightly.

What she rejected in it yesterday, faded and pure white,
You don't deny today what sprouted gray,
is what she rejects in it today, although it is dyed.
Though yesterday you refused it when dyed.

Would that love had shielded my heart from its cravings,
If only desire protected my heart from its greed,
so no coveted thing could ever draw it near.
The coveted is never brought near.

Indeed I go hungry out of abstinence, though the earth is lush
I'm ascetic yet earth covers vegetation,
with growth; I thirst, though rain's great bucket is poured out.
Clouds pour rain and spring flows.

Nor do I pity greed whose possessor has failed
I don't covet, though its seeker is disappointed,
in his striving, knowing that livelihood is earned.
Sustenance is earned, that's known.

The end of craving wealth whose gift is held over you
The fruit of greed is a bitter extract,
is an extract whose foulness perfume cannot conceal.
Not masked by perfume's scent.

Purge your friendships of a friend who brings you blame,
Purify your morals from the vice that shames you,
and stay safe alone, for among people there is none to befriend.
And comply alone, for no one's accompanied.

I have been tried by people whose companion has no choice;
I'm tired of needy friends,
and water turns salty at times, yet is drunk.
Water turns salty though potable.

How often Time promises my hopes, then betrays them,
How often fate promises my dreams and breaks them,
a brother in whom I rejoice; yet Time is ʿUrqūb.
I feel happy with a brother, yet fate limps.

I seek virtues like those found in Abū Ḥasan;
I seek to reach Al-Saji, though in vain,
but can any approach bring me to al-Jawzāʾ?
Can the celestial sign of Gemini bring me closer?

Let him be ransom for Muḥammad, whose bounty is forgotten:
May every departed soul reach Muhammad Al-Munsi,
the man who takes back his gifts, whose scant bounty is counted.
Seeking him, though his visit's calculated.

حالٌ تحدّثه الأحلامَ جاهلةً

A condition that speaks to him of dreams, unaware
A state dreams speak of ignorantly
of catching up with him; and the dreamer is deceived.
As attainable, yet dreams are untrue.

If fortune advanced some people, mistaken about them,
If fortune advances the misguided,
or patronage and favor distinguished them,
Or intentions draw them near.

a sword is known for cutting, though kept in reserve,
The sword proves cutting while sheathed,
and the noble steed is prized by nature, even when led alongside.
The gaze honors by nature, though weak.

Beware the newcomer to prosperity, whose newfound
Beware a newly acquired gift
eminence is procured by a face's intercession.
Through a mediator's plea.

You distress him by asking where his eminence comes from;
Ask where the villain got his power,
the base man is reviled for the very means by which he rose.
The despicable person rises by evil means.

Are you truly yourself, while Abū Ḥasan is in the world?
You, only you in life, Abu Hasan,
You are right: this world indeed holds marvels.
You speak truly, life is wondrous.

If you see the grazing herd's little tail safe,
When you see the she-wolves unafraid,
though he has not guarded it, the wolf forbears for a reason.
No wolf dares attack them.

O you who clothe me in prestige when
upon me if cloaks shrink away from me:
My gowns shrink from me.

I have clung to a covenant from you, whose pledges are never
I hold to a promise from you that's unbroken,
forgotten, nor is its cord severed by betrayal.
Its pledge not forgotten, its rope not severed.

My trials have praised you, after probing
the depths of men and been worn out by trials.
The souls of men, learned through experience.

May every departing woman reward you,
bearing a downpour of overflowing words.
From her abundant, cascading words.

When I brand its rain with your name, down come
When I mark her life with your name, she melts,
the heights before it, and the untamable obey it.
The peeks obey you, calamities submit.

So live safe for them and me, as long as a pilgrim touching the Stone circles
So make peace with them, and leave me to circulate,
seven times, and one in distress clings to the curtains.
Going around seven times, crying at the veil.

You are sought in hope and feared, open-doored yet unassailable;
You're hoped for and feared, so leave the door ajar,
for the generous man is indeed sought in hope and feared.
The generous is hoped for and feared.
