God bless the striver whose foot has carried him
God gave him feet that brought him
to where his lofty ambitions have reached beyond.
To heights beyond ambitious minds

He traversed the night, seeking the heights, until there vanished
He traversed the path seeking glory until he attained it
his brothers beneath the darkness—his stars.
While his brethren remained in the dark with their stars

He gave the desert's perils judgment over his life,
He took dangerous risks upon himself
venturing ever deeper until his mastery was complete.
Plunging ahead or able to rein himself in

The days pluck him bare while he is in flight;
Time tests him while he remains a bird
his headlong daring pits him against fortune.
Competing against fate with his onslaught

Yet he sits chaste and content
in belly and mouth with just enough provisions.
With the ample provisions he has stored in his mouth

No freshness in his face has been diminished,
No sweetness in his face has diminished
nor does the shame of begging brand him with frailty.
Nor has the question of begging made him deaf

He hurts for every drop that drips
of his honor's water, as though his blood were flowing.
From his water as if it were his blood

Time's dispositions changed their colors toward him;
People's natures have been colored by him
its light days and dark days seasoned him.
So his gray hair and sorrows have molded him

He tested people so if you bargain with him
for closeness to his brother, you would think him shy of him.
For his brotherly affection he will feel ashamed

If he is provided for only as a beggar,
If he is only given sustenance by begging
the provision he welcomes is what he is denied.
Then his thankful rizq is from what is forbidden to him

By God, world, I have not shunned you out of hatred,
What a name hides behind its evil
and indeed I know there is enjoyment in you.
Yet the lion cannot be fooled by its smile

If God and resolute reason had not helped him
is not their craft, nor my loyalty their nature.
The arrows of correctness would not have hit their mark

I draw the viper from its hiding place, yet
With abundant kingdom, legacy and satisfaction
among them none has a sickness my magic can cure.
Whatever he desired, nothing would be missing

He rained in summer so he thought

His rain had saturated the earth completely

Many a man smiles at me from behind his malice,
He keeps me up praising him without
but a lion's smile does not deceive me.
Arrogance and sleeps heedless of his duties

Were it not for God's protection and steadfast resolve,
His acceptance and wisdom are not straitened
his well-aimed arrows would not have lost their points against me.
But my understanding falls short of grasping him

And one vast in possessions and renown, possessing
Joy and generosity shine from his face
all he wishes—no one has heard of anything he lacks.
So his cheer is for me and his generosity for others

He rained a summer shower and imagined that
Yesterday I had mercy on my lot in what I missed
his lasting rains had covered the whole earth.
Of his money and today I have mercy on him

He kept me awake over praise I did not owe,
My friendship matches his perfectly
in admiration of him, while he slept through what he owed.
The full moon is born a twin unable to be separated

There was no narrowness in his welcome or his views
His heart wanted me close
on generosity; but his understanding could not encompass me.
But ideals I hold myself to kept me aloof

His face has cheer, and he has generosity:
He thought and deemed his money too much for me
his cheer is for me, his generosity for others.
Calculating, while I could not afford a dirham from him

Yesterday I pitied my lot for what I missed
If there is still a connection then it is from me
of his wealth; today I pity it on his account.
Or if there is a rope of harmony let him tie it fast

I wish Hussein who carries me would, among them
the full moon is a newborn whose twin is rare.
Guide me on the clear path so I meet him

His heart desired to draw me to him,
Make him eternal in this world and keep him for me
but his overblown valuations drove me away.
While others come and go or pass away

محاسباً ولم يسعْني درهمُهْ
He thought, then deemed his dinar too much for me,
Or I wish he would lighten my load
counting the cost; his dirham was not enough for me.
For it has weighed heavily on me, his blessings

If there is a bond, it comes from me; but if
Loss upon loss as the pearls of Muzn broke apart
the cord of accord is cut, he is the one who severs it.
And its string snapped

Would that al-Husayn, who among them carries me
It's as if what we gain of his wealth
along a road whose main course is clear to me,
Is a burden whose loss we fear and so snatch up

I tire of abundance so while his excellence
as for anyone else, let it preserve him or cut him down.

Or would that he withhold from me, lightening my burden,
It's as if he swore never to attain wealth
for his favors have weighed me down.
So whatever he gives, his oath obliges it

He tied me in friendship so no creditor
the rainclouds' drawstrings and their bonds come loose.
Can unravel it nor can any envious one sever it

As though what we gain from his wealth
He does good even if I cut off
were a lightening of his burden, which he seizes lest he miss it.
My kinship to him, it's as if our love were a womb relation

He has proved too much for abundance: just as his merit
Melancholy gave him a towering origin
builds it up, a request appears and tears it down.
And discerning wisdom perfects it

As though he swore he would never attain wealth,
He brings together every pair of opposites
so through what is given his oath is fulfilled.
Until his sword and his pen are reconciled

No delusion about you dims the brilliance
can saw it apart, nor any envier break it.
In you nor does any doubt about you make him suspicious

Rather faults that anger carps at
to keep ties with me, as though my friendship were his bond of blood.
He vents now and then but then suppresses

A lofty lineage invested him with preeminence
God reveals their excellence though he hides them
therein, and brilliant judgment brings it to perfection.

until his sword and pen have become friends.
It let fall for them the starred dusk and wept

From the blaze of noon its hot tears
in you, nor did his discernment disappoint him.
Its lush plants vied turbulently

the proud man's nose, lest its proud lift be wronged.

Bearing it, reciting it or rendering it song
in you, nor any offense of yours to resent.
They are amazed by its form on you

And your description of it, ordered and from it I order my poem
he spits it out at times, and at times suppresses it.

And you surpass it in your generosity and silence it
like gray hair: the one who hides it cries its name aloud.
