For which of Time's ways shall I reproach it?
On what morals should I reproach time,
It is nothing but its vicissitudes and calamities.
When it is just its changes and tribulations?

My skin is rent, though its blades are blunted,
My skin is torn though its edge is sharp,
and my wounds gape, though its claws are blunt.
And my wounds are dry though its claws are deaf.

Scars follow closely, one upon another,
Scars, one covers the other,
and an illness whose fellow flares whenever it subsides.
And an illness, when it erupts, its owner flares up.

I occupied my hand awhile with counting its offenses;
I busied my hands for a while counting its sins,
they multiplied, so I left it alone, no longer calling it to account.
But when neglected, I do not hold it accountable.

while its striker and its plunderer bear down upon me,
Yet it attacks me and strips me of them.

time and again; once I rebel and quarrel with it.
Though I disobey it once, provoking it.

Nor is it ashamed of what I blame it for.

I advise you, do not be fooled by the beauty of its face,
its visible aspect is fair, its hidden aspect hideous.
For it is beautiful in appearance, but ugly at heart.

it is only a lion you are riding.
It is but a lame camel, and you its rider.

Men before us have fallen,
by its deceptive semblances and pale aspect, short of their goal.
On them dripped its traits, constant and fleeting.

Written by God, none can erase what He has scribed.

Some held fast are hurried on, and others given delay;
Of what is locked, hasty or delayed,
he who gives them slack must one day draw them in.
It will loosen one day, inevitably pulling it.

I pretended to argue with death’s caller,
yet however long my silence, I shall answer him.
Though I answered his long silence in kind.

yet one shielded from his archer must still be struck by him.
Whoever takes precautions will inevitably hit his target.

My friends, by God, I would seek vengeance for you
My will and my careful precaution will strike it down,
from Time, if ever a seeker could attain that vengeance.
By its covenant in secret, I admonished it.

Must I each day have a slender bough snatched away,
And how many of you were like stars, illuminating the darkness for a time,
and a precious treasure among you seized by Death?
Only to fade after shining brightly.

Death melted away his branches and twigs.

by his calamities where he dwells in my heart's depths.
Which, when drawn, its arrows never miss their mark.

And when the first recovered, it gave him another drink.

And tears upon tears whose flow could not be stopped.

Would that when it doubled over,
when its archer shoots successively, his unerring arrows never fail him.
Its destinies had clung together or leveled in their positions.

Leaving behind a writhing back, its rider thrown off.

Protected by necklaces from its loss and dispersion.

Their insignia below the soil and its layers.

Two pebbles of pearl, two chaste ones: never did
You’d think it rivals the sun’s brow away from them,

If only fate had not seized the thing when it swooped down.

They are two eggs in a shelter beside a bewildering wilderness,
It cursed them as two suns, and the darkness of sorrow swore
whose trackless wastes and open plains barred night-time visitors.
Never to unveil its gloom upon them.

They see a tear in the young man as a defect in his structure,
its nest-scrapes and tracks in that open expanse.
If he cries or yields to sadness in his side.

Who gained honor from what tribulations brought him.

Some girls degrade noble lineage,
if only one who fears death could keep his charge safe!
While some people’s sons are defects among the living.

Take pride in the son of a soul, for death only comes
while some sons of man disgrace him among his tribe.

of an ancient blade whose striking edges never blunt—
Around him died his loved ones and darlings.

Yet bewildered by its continuous wonders.

A stubborn enemy who does not tire, demanding

Without respite, his demands do not sleep.

his loved ones, men and women, die around him.
Of feeble strength, easily drawn into its pulling.

who finds it strange that its wonders follow one another.
But no one wins over it with patience but you.
