ماwhat مُكْرَمٌan honored thing هيِّنُlowly الآباءthe forefathers يكرههhates it
ما مُكْرَمٌ هيِّنُ الآباء يكرهه
أبناءُsons قومٍa people ويَرضَىand approve عنهof it آباءُfathers
أبناءُ قومٍ ويَرضَى عنه آباءُ
What honored thing, of lowly parentage, is hated
by a people's sons, while fathers approve of it?
صِينَwas safeguarded لدىwith اللهGod بأسمٍby a name واحدٍone وغَدَاand has become
صِينَ لدى الله بأسمٍ واحدٍ وغَدَا
مُشَهَّراًpublicized فيهin it بينamong الناسpeople أسماءُnames
مُشَهَّراً فيه بين الناس أسماءُ
It was safeguarded with God by one name, and has become
a place where names are publicized among people.
تَلْقَىencounter بهin it شِقَّةًa strip of cloth عيناكyour two eyes وهوand it غداًtomorrow
تَلْقَى به شِقَّةً عيناك وهو غداً
فيهin it شقاءٌmisery لأقوامٍfor some people وَنعْماءُand bliss
فيه شقاءٌ لأقوامٍ وَنعْماءُ
Your eyes see in it a strip of cloth, yet tomorrow it
holds misery for some people, and bliss.
إذاwhen وسمتَyou inscribed علاماتٍmarks بهupon it فبدتthen they appeared
إذا وسمتَ علاماتٍ به فبدت
تلوحshow clearly فهيso they are لهfor it سِتْرٌa covering وإخفاءُand concealment
تلوح فهي له سِتْرٌ وإخفاءُ
When you inscribe marks upon it and they appear
plainly, they are a covering and concealment for it.
فإنand if كستهclothed it ثيابَgarments العزِّglory ناسجةًweaving
فإن كسته ثيابَ العزِّ ناسجةً
يدٌa hand صَناعٌskilled نَفَتْهاremoved them عنهfrom it خَرقاءُa clumsy one
يدٌ صَناعٌ نَفَتْها عنه خَرقاءُ
And if garments of glory are woven to clothe it
by a skilled hand, a clumsy one strips them away.
