وإنand although كنتُI was أكنيI speak allusively واعنيand I mean سواكِsomeone other than you
O moringa tree of the Ghawr, may kindness water you!
O bān tree of al-Ghawr, show kindness—may you be watered!
Though I use you as a veiled name, it is another I mean.
And though I speak allusively and mean someone other than you,
أحبكِI love you منfor أجلِthe sake of منthe one whom تُشبهينyou resemble
لوَif only انيthat I أراهI see him كماjust as قدindeed أراكِI see you
I love you for the sake of the one you resemble;
I love you for the sake of the one you resemble.
if only I could see her as I now see you.
If only I could see that one as I see you!

I spend them in night-time talk فيin ذَراكِyour shelter
I remembered—ah, my longing! Could I forget—
I remembered—and oh, my anguish! Have I forgotten
the nights I passed in evening converse beneath your shelter?
the nights I spent talking in your shelter?
يُخضَّرُis made green عودُكِyour bough منfrom دَمعتيmy tear
ويَعْطَرُand grows fragrant منfrom بُردthe mantle of هندٍHind ثراكِyour earth
Your bough grows green from my tears,
Your bough is made green by my tear,
and your soil is perfumed by Hind’s mantle.
and your earth grows fragrant from Hind’s mantle.

O Hind, though the spiteful may restrain me,
And O Hind, the spiteful have no sense,
in their eyes, your bounty is among my sins.
when they count your bounty among my sins.
كفىit suffices الوجدlove’s anguish أنيthat I إذاwhen ماfor emphasis استرحتُI found solace
إلىin اسمكyour name عمَّيتُهI veiled it بالأراكِwith the arāk tree
Proof enough of my passion: whenever I seek comfort
For love’s anguish, this is enough: whenever I find solace
in your name, I conceal it beneath “al-Arak.”
in your name, I veil it with the arāk tree.
ظمئتُI thirsted إلىfor أعذبِthe sweeter of الشربتيْنthe two draughts
فكلتاهماfor both of them قدindeed حوتهاhave held them يداكِyour two hands
I thirst for the sweeter of the two draughts,
I thirsted for the sweeter of the two draughts,
and your two hands hold them both.
for your two hands have held them both.
فكيفso how تُعنِّينَنيyou torment me فيover الشِّهادِhoney in the comb
محلِّئةًdriving me away وتُحَلِّينand you sweeten فاكِyour mouth
How then can you torment me over honey,
So how can you torment me over the honey,
barring me from the spring while sweetening your mouth?
driving me away while sweetening your own mouth?
هَناكِmay it delight you ومنand among عجبٍwonders فيin هواlove
كِfor you قولِيَmy saying فيin قتلthe killing of نفسيmy soul هَناكِmay it delight you
May it delight you! One marvel of my love—
May it delight you! And a wonder of my love
—for you is that, as I am slain, I say: “May it delight you!”
for you is my saying, as my soul is slain: may it delight you!

My tears pour when the rain grows scant,
Buckets of tears pour when the rain is scant,
and my heart blazes when the embers die.
and a heart blazes when the embers die.

سِقاطيmy slips of speech فأشكرُso I give thanks والقلبُwhile the heart شاكيcomplaining
I fear that in reproaching you I might diminish you
I fear that, in reproach, you may be slighted
with my low words; so I give thanks, though my heart complains.
by my slips of speech; so I give thanks, though my heart complains.
إذاif الصدّrejection أرضاكِpleases you فهوthen it is الوصالُunion
فأنَّىso however فعلتِyou act فأهلاًthen welcome بذاكِto that
If rebuff pleases you, then it is union;
If rejection pleases you, then it is union;
whatever you do, I welcome it.
so however you act, I welcome it.
