Divine decree and destiny took pity on Baghdad.
Fate and destiny have been kind to Baghdad
Time turned kindly toward her and grew bountiful.

Glory was upset by its long oppression
oppression had beset her, then rose and triumphed.

Its mauling has left me no limb
And tongues as barbed as arrow heads
without the marks of fang and claw upon it.
I hope for their nearness though misguided
تنبِذنيcast me out فيfor حبّكمlove of you نواظرٌeyes
وألسنٌand tongues مَنبَذَةَas one casts out النِّضوِthe emaciated mount المُعَرّْmangy
Eyes cast me out for loving you,
And their kindness, like Kahlan hoped for Mudar's love
and tongues, as they cast out a worn-out, mangy mount.
Better to return from visiting them
أرجوI hope for نداهمtheir bounty ضلَّةًmisguidedly وعطفَهمand their sympathy
كماjust as رجتhoped قحطانُQahtan ودّاًfor affection فيfrom مُضرْMudar
Misguidedly I hope for their bounty and sympathy,
To a difficult but flourishing abode
as Qahtan hoped for affection from Mudar.
So inquire, in your absence, about my welfare
أرجِعُI return عنfrom زيارتيmy visits فيamid يُسرهمtheir prosperity
إلىto محلٍّa dwelling عامرٍfilled منwith العُسُرْhardship
I return from my visits amid their prosperity
And me, when you pass or time shifts
to a dwelling filled with hardship.
Your tongue, and all who speak through you
فافتقِدواso seek out شِلواًa torn bodily remnant لكمyours بقاؤهits survival
ومنكُمُand from you إنif فاتَhe is lost أوor مرَّpasses away يَمُرّْhe passes
So seek out this torn remnant, whose survival is yours,
Whether sensible minds or poetic wits
and if he is lost or passes away, he passes from you.
My expressive capacity has reached its limit
لسانكمyour tongue وكلُّand everyone منwho يُنطِقُكمgives you voice
سواهother than him معقولُbound اللسانof tongue أوor مُجَرّْtongue-slit
He is your tongue; all who would give you voice
So God restrict what I have poured forth
besides him are tongue-bound or tongue-slit.
After you, nothing remains in me
قدalready بلَغَreached المفصلَthe joint منيof me جازريmy butcher
فاللّهَso, for God's sake فيّconcerning me أنlest يَحُزَّhe sever ماwhat جَزَرْhe butchered
My butcher has now reached my joint;
To hope for provision or expect tomorrow
for God's sake, protect me lest he sever what he has butchered.
So fulfill your debt of bounty to me in seclusion
لمhas not تبقremained فيّin me بعدكمsince your departure بقيّةٌa remnant
يُرجَىis hoped لهاfor it رفدُaid غدٍof tomorrow ويُنتظَرْand awaited
Nothing remains in me since you departed
For my poetry has paid its vows to you
for which tomorrow's aid may be hoped or awaited.
فاقضواso discharge ديونَthe debts جودكمof your generosity فيin خَلَّتيmy need
فقدfor already قضىfulfilled شعريَmy poetry فيكمconcerning you ماwhat نَذَرْit vowed
So discharge your generosity's debts by relieving my need:
my poetry has fulfilled what it vowed concerning you.
