بطرفك والمسحورُ يُقسم بالسحرِ

أعمدا رماني أم أصاب ولا يدري

With your glance and the enchanted one swears by magic

Are they pomegranate pillars or did he guess and not know

تعرَّضَ بي في القانصين مسدّد ال

إشارة مدلول السهام على النحرِ

He gestured to me in the two small arrows directing

The indication of the arrows at the throat

رمى اللحظةَ الأولى فقلتُ مجرّبٌ

وكرَّرها أخرى فأحسستُ بالشرِّ

He shot the first glance so I said an expert

And he repeated another so I felt the harm

فهل ظنَّ ما قد حرَّم اللّهُ من دمي

مباحاً له أم نام قومٌ على الوِترِ

Did he think what Allah has forbidden of my blood

Permissible to him or did a group of people sleep on the fur

بنجدٍ ونجدٌ دارُ جودٍ وذمّةٍ

مطالٌ بلا عُسرٍ ومطلٌ بلا عُذْرِ

In Najd, and Najd is the home of generosity and covenant

Asking without hardship and asking without excuse

وسمراءُ ودَّ البدرُ لو حال لونُه

إلى لونها في صبغة الأوجه السُّمرِ

The dark one beloved of Badr, if his color changed

To her color in the dye of the brownish faces

خليليّ هل من وقفةٍ والتفاتةٍ

إلى القبة السوداءِ من جانب الحِجْرِ

My friend, is there any standing and any turning

To the black dome from the side of the rock

وهل مَن أرانا الحجّ بالخَيف عائدٌ

إلى مثلها أو عدَّها حِجَّةَ العمرِ

And is there anyone who showed us the Hajj at Khayf returning

To the like of it or counted it as the Hajj of a lifetime

فللّه ما أوفى الثلاثَ على مِنىً

لأهل الهوى لو لم تحنْ ليلةُ النَّفْرِ

By Allah, the three did not fulfill for the people of passion in Mina

If the night of departure had not been kind

لقد كنتُ لا أوتى من الصبر قبلَها

فهل تعلمان اليومَ أين مضى صبري

Indeed, I did not possess patience before it

Do you know today where my patience has gone

وكنتُ ألوم العاشقين ولا أرى

مزيَّةَ ما بين الوصال إلى الهجرِ

And I used to blame the lovers and not see

The advantage between union and separation

فأعدَى إليّ الحبَّ صحبةُ أهله

ولم يدر قلبي أنّ داء الهوى يسري

So the love came to me in the company of its people

And my heart did not know that the disease of passion flows

أيشردُ لبّي يا غزالةَ حاجرٍ

وأنتِ بذات البان مجموعةُ الأمرِ

Does my heart wander, O gazelle of Hajir

While you in your house have gathered resolve

خذي لحظ عيني في الغُصوب إضافةً

إلى القلب أو ردّي فؤادي إلى صدري

Take a glance of my eye in advance

In addition to the heart or return my spirit to my chest

وإلا فظهر الهجر أوطأُ مركباً

إذا خُنتِ واستوطأتِ لي مركبَ الغدرِ

Or else, estrangement's back is the most broken

If you betray and ride for me the ship of betrayal

وإني لجلْدُ العزم أملك شهوتي

وأعرف أيّامي وأقوى على سري

And I am one who controls his resolve, holds back his desire

Knows his days, and is stronger upon his hidden self

وأحمل أثقال الحبيب خفيفةً

ولكنّ حملَ الضيم ثقلٌ على ظهري

And I carry the burdens of the beloved lightly

But carrying injustice is heavy upon my back

ولا يملك المولى وفائي بنَكثه

ولا يشتري معروفَ ودِّيَ بالنّكرِ

And the Master does not possess my loyalty to break it

Nor buys my good company with rejection

ومن دون ضيمي بسطةُ الأرض والسُّرى

وخوض الدياجي وامتعاضُ الفتى الحرِّ

And without my injustice - the vastness of the earth and Sirius

And entering the seas and the irritation of the free man

وإنِّي من مولى الملوك ورأيِهِ

وسلطانِهِ بين المجرّةِ والنَّسرِ

And I am from the Master of Kings and his opinion

And his authority between the galaxy and the eagle

فلا أنا مغمودٌ ولا أنا مُسْلَمٌ

وفي سيفه عزِّي وفي يده نصري

So I am neither suppressed nor subjugated

And in his sword is my honor and in his hand is my victory

تعالى بركن الدين صوتي وشَيَّدتْ

محاسنُهُ وصفي وسار بها ذكري

Come, may the pillar of the religion, my voice be raised

His beauty built my description and his fame circulated with it

وكان إليّ الدهرُ بالشرِّ ناظراً

فغمَّض عنّي جودُهُ ناظرَ الدهرِ

And time had been looking at me with evil

So his generosity blinded the look of time from me

وإن كان هذا القولُ قدماً يطيعني

فقد زاد بَسْطاً في لساني وفي فكري

And if this saying had been obeying me early

It would have expanded more in my tongue and mind

وكنت له نجماً فلما مدحته

كساني سنا إقبالِهِ بُلجةَ الفجر

And I was a star for him so when I praised him

His prosperity clothed me in the fine garb of dawn

إليك مليكَ الأرض ألقت ملوكُها اض

طراراً عنانَ النهي في الأرضِ والأمرِ

To you, the King of the earth, her kings have let go

The reins of prohibition in the land and command

ودان لك الغُرُّ الميامينُ من بني

بُويْه كما دانَ الكواكبُ للبدرِ

The noble thoroughbreds of the sons of Buwayh submitted to you

As the planets submit to the moon

رأوك فتاهم في الشجاعة والندى

وشيخهم المتبوعَ في الرأي والعُمرِ

They saw you as their youth in courage and bounty

And their elder who is followed in opinion and lifetime

فأعطوك طوعاً ما تعذَّر منهُمُ

على كلّ باغ بالكراهةِ والقسرِ

So they willingly gave you what was made difficult from them

To every desirer with dislike and coercion

نظمتَ لهم عِقدَ العُلا وفضَلتَهم

فأصبحتَ وسْطَ العقدِ في ذلك النحرِ

You stringed for them the necklace of supremacy and preferred them

So you became amidst that necklace in that throat

لكم أوّل الدنيا القديمُ وعنكُمُ

يكون قيامُ الأمرِ في ساعةِ الحشرِ

For you is the ancient first of the world and about you

Will be the establishment of the matter at the time of Resurrection

وما المُلك إلا ما اختبى متمدّحاً

بأيامكم فيه المحجَّلةِ الغُرِّ

And kingship is nothing but the hidden being praised

In its gorgeousness for your days

ولا الدهر إلا ما تقلَّب صَرفُهُ

على ما قسمتم من يَسارٍ ومن عُسرِ

And time is nothing but its vicissitudes turning

Upon what you have apportioned of ease and hardship

ولا تطعم الدنيا بنيها سوى الذي

تشيرون من حُلوٍ إليه ومن مرِّ

And the world does not feed her sons except what

You point out from sweet and bitter

بكم يصبح الدينُ الحنيفيُّ آمناً

إذا بات مخلوعَ الفؤاد من الذُّعرِ

Through you the Hanifi religion becomes safe

When it sleeps distressed in fright

وما برحتْ أبياتُكم في ابتنائِهِ

دعائم للخَطِّيِّ والقُضُبِ البُتْرِ

And your verses did not cease being pillars in its building

Supports for the wrinkled and staffs for the chopped

وأنت الذي كنت الذخيرةَ منهُمُ

قديماً إذا الرحمنُ بارك في الذُّخرِ

And you were the reserve among them

Whenever the Merciful blessed the hoards

فلو بَقيَ الماضون منهم تمثّلوا

بملكك في مُلكٍ وعصرِك في عصرِ

So if the departed ones among them remained, they would exemplify

Your kingdom with a kingdom and your time with a time

إذا ما أراد اللّهُ إحياءَ دولةٍ

بغاك بنوها بالخديعةِ والمكرِ

Whenever God wills the revival of a state

Her sons call you with guile and scheming

وإن شاءَ في دهماءِ قومٍ إبادةً

رماهم بدُهْمٍ من جيادك أو شُقْرِ

And if He wills destruction upon an arrogant people

He casts them with ignorance from your noble steeds or hawks

ومن ملَّ طولَ العمرِ والعزِّ قاده

لك الحَيْنُ في حبلِ الشناءةِ والغِمرِ

And whoever is fed up of long life and honor leads him

To you the present in the rope of familiarity and flooding

قسمتَ بكفيّك المنيَّةَ والغنى

للهفانَ يستجدي وغضبانَ يستشري

You divide doom and prosperity with your two hands

To the passionate begging and the angry borrowing

فأنتَ إذا شِمتَ الظُّبى قاتلُ العدا

وأنت إذا شمت الندى قاتلُ الفقرِ

So you are, when you sense prey, the killer of enemies

And you are, when you sense bounty, the killer of poverty

فلا زال معقوداً عطاؤك بالغنى

ولا زال معقوداً لواؤك بالنصرِ

So your gift has not ceased to be tied to prosperity

And your banner has not ceased to be tied to victory

وزارك بالنيروز أيمنُ قادمٍ

سَرى لك في وفد الرجاء الذي يسري

The prosperous right hand visited you in delegation

Traveling the hope that walks, with the New Year

جديداً على العام الجديد مؤمَّراً

كما أمْرك الماضي على العبدِ والحرِّ

New upon the new year, commissioned

As your past commissioned upon the servant and freeman

تُزخرَفُ منه الأرضُ من حَلْي روضها

بما كُسيَتْ من صِبغْ أيّامِك الخُضرِ

The earth is adorned from it with the jewelry of her meadow

From what she was clothed with from the dye of your green days

كأنّ الربيعَ من صِفاتِك يمترِي

وشائعَهُ ومن سجاياك يَستقري

As if spring from your qualities takes its supplies

And rumors, and from your morals takes its settlement

فطاوِلْ به عدَّ السنين مفاوتاً

بعمرك مقدارَ الإحاطةِ والحصرِ

So prolong with it counting the years, transcending

Your lifetime the extent of encompassing and counting

متى تطوِ مُلكاً تنتشرْ لك بعدَهُ

ممالكُ لا تَبلَى على الطيِّ والنشرِ

When will you complete a kingdom, so that after it

Kingdoms spread for you that do not wear out from folding and spreading

وحيَّاك منّي بالمديح مبشِّرٌ

خمائل لم تنبتْ على سَبَل القَطرِ

And greeted you from me with praise, a harbinger

Of beautiful visions not grown on the roads of rain

لها مدَدٌ من خاطرٍ غيرِ ناضبٍ

مليءٍ إذا كافَى الصنيعةَ بالشكرِ

Having extensions from an inexhaustible conscience

Full, when it fulfills, gratitude with thanks

خدمتُك منها بالمحصَّنةِ التي

عليها أحامي والمخدَّرةِ البِكرِ

I served you from it with the impenetrable one

Upon which I peg my hopes and the untouched virgin

فكرَّمتني لما قبلتَ نكاحَها

وزيَّدتَ في فضلي وضاعفتَ من قدري

So you honored me when you accepted her marriage

And increased my virtues and doubled my worth

وملَّكتني قلباً كريماً ولم أكن

أظنُّ قلوبَ الأسد تُملك بالشِّعرِ

And you gave me a generous heart while I had not thought

That the hearts of lions are possessed with poetry

فقمتُ على ظلٍّ من الأنس باردٍ

ومن هيبةِ الملك العقيم على الجمرِ

So I stood in a shade of intimate coldness

And from the barren awe of the king over ember

ولكنّها قد موطلت بمهورها

ولابدّ في عَقد النكاح من المَهرِ

But she has been slow with her dowry

And a marriage contract necessitates a dowry

وممّا شجاها أن تضلَّ وسيرُها

مع النجم أو تَظمى على ساحل البحرِ

And from what stirred her is that she wanders lost

With the star or grows thirsty on the coast of the sea

وخيرُ العطايا ما يُراد به العلا

وما كلُّ جُود باللُّجينِ وبالتبرِ

And the best of gifts is what elevation is intended with

And not all generosity is with mud and ashes

وما بي إلا أن نسيتَ فراعني

لتعلمَ أنّي من علاك على ذكرِ

And I have nothing but that you forgot providing for me

To know I am from your elevation in mention
