ما أمُّ أولادٍ كثيرٍ في العددْ
تُروِيquenches thirst رِضاعاًby nursing وهيwhile she بِكرٌa virgin لمhas not تلدْgiven birth
تُروِي رِضاعاً وهي بِكرٌ لم تلدْ
What mother has children many in number,
and quenches their thirst by nursing, though a virgin who has never given birth?
تبسِمُshe smiles عنrevealing عَذبsweet الرُّضابِsaliva باردٍcool
تبسِمُ عن عَذب الرُّضابِ باردٍ
لولاwere it not for دمٌblood يصبُغهcolors it قلتI would say بَرَدْhail
لولا دمٌ يصبُغه قلت بَرَدْ
She smiles, revealing sweet, cool saliva;
but for the blood that colors it, I would call it hail.
أعجِبْmarvel بهat it ماءًwater زُلالاًclear شَبِماًcold
أعجِبْ به ماءً زُلالاً شَبِماً
تجمعُهgathers it فيin أُهُبٍskins نارٌa fire تقِدْblazes
تجمعُه في أُهُبٍ نارٌ تقِدْ
Marvel at it—water, clear and cold,
gathered into skins by a blazing fire!
ياoh حسنَهاher beauty مجموعةَgathered together الشملِthe whole وياand oh
يا حسنَها مجموعةَ الشملِ ويا
أضعافَmany times ماhow تَحسُنُshe is lovely والشملُwhile the whole بددْis scattered
أضعافَ ما تَحسُنُ والشملُ بددْ
How lovely she is with her parts united—and oh,
how many times lovelier when her parts lie scattered!
